Worst Mom’s in Literature
Mother’s Day is coming up and last year I did a book list of my favorite literary moms. But I decided this year, to go a different direction. So, if you’ve ever dealt with “mom guilt” this list should make you feel much better about yourself. Here are some of the worst moms in literature.
Cersei Lannister – Game of Thrones
So many people watched the show, and Cersei was truly despicable on the screen for countless reasons. I’ll just tell you now, equally bad in the books. I guess some could argue that a lot of the horrible things she did were because she loved her children so much. But no one can convince me that it was healthy. None of her kids stood a chance.
The Other Mother – Coraline
I first read Coraline in Jr. High and I loved how weird it was. The Other Mother was obviously creepy, but reading it now as an adult, she was the WORST. Totally manipulative and playing on a child’s insecurities. Gross, no thank you creepy, button-eyed, mom imposter.
Mrs. Wormwood (Matilda’s Mom) – Matilda
Matilda was one of my favorite books and movies when I was a kid! I feel like her mom was worse in the book than in the movie. Totally negligent and only attentive when it was convenient or useful. I mean, I can remember having real sympathy for a fictional character when I first read this one. It was heartbreaking.
Patty Watts – Darling Rose Gold
Darling Rose Gold was such a trippy book. Anything that deals with Munchausen by Proxy is hard for me to wrap my head around. I really didn’t like any of the characters in this book, but there was no doubt that Patty was a dangerous mom who tried to pass off her abuse as the good intentions of a protective mom. So cringeworthy!
Krystle Goodman is a crazy cat lady, who loves to drink exorbitant amounts of coffee, and read a shocking amount of books. She lives in Benton with her husband Josh, her son Roman, and their two cats Roxanne and Abby. When she isn’t reading, you’ll find her cooking, painting, or watching true crime shows.
