Somebody just reminded me that I took pictures this weekend of the cute Victorian building that houses Webb’s House of Flowers being dismantled by Doyle Webb himself and family. I regret that I only did a “drive-by shooting” to get these pics. I’d have like to say hello to folks and get a comment on what’s happening. Click to this post and scroll down in the comments for some backstory.
MySaline told you that the property zoning where the flower shop sits is going to be talked about Monday, January 26th, 2015, at the Benton City Council meeting. The folks that run the KFC nearby are going to build a new KFC restaurant on the current Webb’s property. It is rumored – and I’ve been too covered up to do a proper check – that CVS Pharmacy will put a store where the KFC currently sits. Seems too small to me, but I’m not in construction. Maybe they are using the property behind KFC too.
Here are those pictures I took…

I was told that the problem with the old Harvest Foods building is that the land is owned by one entity and the building is owned by another (who leased it to HF), and that once companies find they have to negotiate with TWO entities, they lose interest. That’s what happened with Albertson’s, I think, when they showed an interest.

I’m sure the Economic Development groups are all over trying to fill up that building, but it couldn’t hurt to get your voice heard about the building AND the lack of a Hobby Lobby.

I agree Thelma—the old Harvest Foods location is perfect for a Hobby Lobby. Maybe someone should be actively courting the company to come to Saline County. Personally, I wonder if the reason some of these buildings aren’t getting leased is because no one is out there trying to get them filled. You can’t just put up a sign and expect it to happen. Someone needs to be out there trying to woo these companies to come here.

I sure wish they could find a retailer to fill up the old Harvest Foods building == like Hobby Lobby. There! I have said it again. I want a HL in Saline County!

I have seen Walgreens and CVS in close proximity in several cities and both seem to survive. Usually the cities are bigger than Benton and Bryant. I have been known to go to Walgreens for a particular item and they did not have it, so I went to CVS and found it and vice versa. While they do have a very similar product line, they do not carry the same brands in many cases. One CVS that I am familiar with has a card and product line more like a Hallmark store would have.

When I was by there on Friday, the house was being taken apart. I thought they might be able to jack it up and move it for someone to use elsewhere.

And when they decide we will have another big empty building to go with our empty Harvest Foods and Fred’s and the list goes on and on. Capitalism is fine, but not at the expense of responsible community building and management. We have blocks of empty buildings in our little city as the heart of the community moves further and further out of town. First it was downtown, then Military. Bryant is planning to revitalize an old downtown that is less than a half block while we are encouraging stores that are copycats of each other to duke it out. In the end Walgreens or CVS may win, but the Benton community will lose.

We live in a Capitalist country. Survival of the fittest. I think I’m happy with the government not having more control over businesses. The customers will decide who they like best.

I heard that CVS and Walgreens are actually owned by the same company. But I think they should put the CVS at the other end of Military as well!

The CVS / Walgreens battle is ridiculous. We saw this when we were living on the east coast, except Walgreens was the interloper. It was a terrible business practice that inevitably caused one of the two store to close in the spots where it happened. They put the Rite Aids out of business altogether. CVS is no different than Walgreens. Who is okaying these business choices lately? I could see them putting a CVS at the other end of Military . . . maybe near the new Kum and Go. Then people on that end would have a reason to choose one drug store over the other. Hey they could even have had them put it further out Military where they spent all our money on a fancy divided road with lovely streetlights and sidewalks that no one ever sees. Who is doing the city planning around here, because they are making some lousy choices.

CVS purchased the KFC property, the old Superior Federal Bank Property, the little strip mall property behind KFC and a house or two behind KFC to build the CVS Pharmacy, That is what I have been told. All the properties will be torn down soon, KFC will be last since they will be building a new one between Military and East Streets. That’s what I have been told, I could be wrong you know how that is anyway.

What a shame. I hate to see the old homes/buildings go, they have such character. That’s going to be one very crowded intersection, its bad enough already. Boo….*sigh*

An urgent care clinic is going in between Hastings and Captain D’s. CVS always builds across or near a Walgreens when they can. So sad to see that beautiful house going away…

They’re putting a (confirmed) CVS in Bryant with just Arvest Bank separating it from that Walgreens.

Maybe they had a different location in mind but it was too close to a church.

I’ve talked to the owners of the property where kfc currently sets, back in October when we were looking for building for our business. They told me it all hinged on the elections of it went in their favor and looks like it has, that cvs will be building where kfc sets now.
