The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent (in theaters)
Okay so who doesn’t love Nicholas Cage?! Certainly, he has had a long string of crappy straight to Redbox features in the last several years, but when he’s on, he’s on! If you haven’t seen “Pig,” that’s a good movie that he put out last year. Other than that, I think the last one of his that I watched (besides The Croods: A New Age) was “Joe” back in 2013. Before that though, Nick Cage was the man!!! From “Raising Arizona” to “Honeymoon in Vegas” to “Leaving Las Vegas” to “Guarding Tess,” “The Rock,” “Con-Air,” “Face/Off,” “Gone in 60 Seconds,” “National Treasure,” “Ghost Rider,” and so many others. For a long time, Nick Cage was EVERYWHERE!
I think he might just be back now! This new movie might seem an odd avenue to return to “stardom,” but it’s a fantastic movie! The first time I saw a trailer for it, I thought it looked funny, but it’s so much more than that. Nicholas Cage stars as himself. He’s a famous actor that’s kind of a “has-been” that’s really needing his big “comeback” role. What he’s given instead is an offer of $1 million to fly to a remote Spanish paradise to spend a weekend at a millionaire’s estate for his birthday. Essentially, Nick Cage is the rich guy’s birthday present to himself. The rich guy, Javi Gutierrez, is played by Pedro Pascal (The Mandalorian, WW84). You’ll also see the always-great Tiffany Haddish (Night School, Here Today) and Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother, Dougie Houser.)
I honestly cannot remember the last time Cage got reviews this good for one of his movies. You’ll probably have to go back to the 90s for that. The movie has lots of energy, lots of laughs, great acting, a fun storyline, and great writing. It’s a win all the way around. I don’t want to spoil anything, but the LSD scene may be my favorite!
“The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” is rated R for language throughout, some sexual references, drug use, and violence. I’m going with what may be my highest score so far and giving this one a perfect 5/5. Go see this movie!!!
