Cobra Kai: Season 4 (SPOILER ALERT!!!)
I’m one of the millions who fell in love with “Cobra Kai” the moment it hit Netflix. I’d been wanting to watch it since it first debuted, but I didn’t have the now defunct YouTube Red.
I was born in ’77, so the 80s was my childhood. It was my playground. I grew up watching amazing movies like “Back to the Future,” and “The Goonies,” and “Gremlins,” and, of course, “The Karate Kid.” I’ve always loved “The Karate Kid” series; at least the first three films, and I’ve seen the first two in the series probably at least a hundred times. So, yes I was excited when I first heard about a new series that carries on the story of Daniel LaRusso.
It’s rare that I’m hooked on a show in the first episode. It seems like most often, it takes two or three episodes to rope me in. “Cobra Kai” though, the very first episode hooked me. I love all the throwbacks to the 80s, and the whole persona of the original bad-guy jerk, Johnny Lawrence!
If you’ve not yet started watching “Cobra Kai,” What are you waiting for? Johnny and Daniel are still at odds all these years later, but they have those few moments where they can be “grown-ups.” Daniel-son is married with kids now and owns a very successful car dealership in the Valley. Johnny is single and a drunk and just living a mess of a life. He has an incredibly rocky relationship (if you can call it that) with his son which becomes a big plot point of the show. There’s an episode in either season 2 or 3 where one of his old Cobra Kai buddies from the original movie makes a guest appearance, and it ends up being a really nice episode. Lea Thompson makes a guest appearance. You see Daniel’s mother a few times. The awful terrible John Kreese comes back.
Season 3 takes Daniel on a pilgrimage back to Okinawa to reconnect with Mr. Miyagi’s roots, and there are more great cameos from the second film.
I love the whole vibe of the show, but it’s the heart that really gets me. It’s that same old good feeling you always got watching Daniel-son and the great Mr. Miyagi. There’s so much heart in this show. The acting leaves a little to be desired. It’s not really what you would call stellar acting, but you overlook it because it’s fun; especially if you’re my generation.
So, on to Season 4. It just debuted last week. I started watching it yesterday and I finished it tonight…all ten episodes. In this season, not only do we have to continue to put up with John Kreese, but now we get to once again experience the awfulness that is Terry Silver, played by Thomas Ian Griffith (from the 3rd film.) With Kreese and Silver both running the Cobra Kai dojo, Daniel has his work cut out for him if he wants Miyagi-Do Karate to win out at the upcoming All-Valley Tournament. Daniel and Johnny have teamed up, but that never seems to work out for very long.
Okay I won’t spoil anymore for you. Seriously give “Cobra Kai” a chance if you haven’t already. It’s rated TV-14; mainly for the language. There obviously is a lot of fighting. There’s no sex or nudity, but there is some mild suggestions I guess you could say. However, again, language is the msm driving force behind the TV-14 rating.
