“Bob Ross: Happy Accidents, Betrayal & Greed” (streaming on Netflix)
Okay so who doesn’t love Bob Ross? Seriously! He’s like Mr. Rogers or Bill Cosby. Oh wait…scratch that last one. ? Bob Ross is a legend. He seems like the nicest, calmest, most positive and encouraging person on the entire planet Earth. Right?! I was excited, but honestly very nervous about watching this documentary. From the title, I was afraid it was going to show some sort of monstrous side of Bob Ross. Does it? You’ll have to watch it for yourself. (Insert evil laugh)
Of course not! Bob Ross brought joy to millions and millions across the world for many years as the world’s most famous art teacher. However, a sinister battle for his business empire cast a shadow over all those “happy little trees.”
Y’all I’ll be honest. This documentary is hard to watch at times if you love Bob Ross like I do. It makes you wonder why there must be evil, greedy people in the world. I watched this documentary this weekend and I’ve read many reviews on it from many different people. Most of the reviews that I’ve read got it right when they said this documentary “got it right.” I’ve seen some really good documentaries and I’ve seen some that I thought were really poorly put together. This one is good. This one is well-researched and tells a compelling story of a man who seemed to want nothing more than to help and inspire people through “The Joy of Painting.”
Greed is an ugly thing, friends. Greed is defined as “intense and selfish desire for something, especially wealth or power.” Unrestrained greed in an individual can lead to callousness, arrogance, and even megalomania, and a person dominated by greed will oftentimes ignore the harm their actions can cause others; even those they claim to love. That is the case in the story of Bob Ross.
I really do encourage you to check out this new documentary. Long live Bob Ross and those happy little trees. “This is your world. You’re the creator. Find freedom on the canvas. Believe that you can do it, because you can do it. You can do it…. The secret to doing anything is believing that you can do it. Anything that you believe you can do strong enough, you can do.” ~Bob Ross
