The Saline County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) is warning residents about scam phone callers that seek your personal information so they can steal your identity.
A statement from SCSO says they have received several complaints about callers posing as police officers. The caller claims that the person’s identity has already been stolen. Then they ask the person to give their identifying information for verification. These calls are not coming from a legitimate source.
The state recently made it known that there are some citizens who actually had their identity stolen, and it was used to file for unemployment without their knowledge. If someone has used your identity to file for unemployment, you will receive a letter from a state agency. You will not receive a phone call.
According to the Benton Police Department, the scammers are calling and actually posing as officers and telling citizens that someone has already fraudulently filed for unemployment in their name. They then ask victims to provide a social security number and/or other identifying information.
Do not give out personal information over the phone. If you have questions about this scam, call SCSO at 501-303-5609 or the Attorney General’s Office at 501-682-2007.
