Book: As I See It
Author: Brent Davis
My Rating: 5 Wistful Stars
Fellow book lovers! We’re four weeks into a month of supporting local authors. And today’s review is SUPER local. A Benton resident and some of his columns for our own Saline Courier. I won’t bury the lead on this review, I’m recommending this to anyone living in the Benton area. Not only is it a good read, it’s also full of history and memories and a general tone of quirkiness that is so enjoyable.
The opening chapter packs a punch. I was ready to read something funny. And while it did make me smile it also made me – a Daddy’s girl through and through – want to shed a tear. Brent brings the book full circle in the end with another article about his father that actually DID make me shed a tear. And in between these two heartfelt and lovingly written tributes, there are countless stories that will have you smiling.

One of my favorite parts of reading this is that he includes landmarks in most of the stories. So, almost every chapter I found myself mentally pointing and saying “I recognize this place!” From The Royal Theater, to Military Road, to multiple instances of getting stuck at the train tracks, it was all recognizable. Something about that made me feel like I was participating in the stories beyond just simply reading them.
As I said at the beginning of this review, I highly recommend this if you live in Benton. If you lived in Benton in the 60’s/70’s, I especially recommend it. Whether you’ve been here your whole life or you just moved in yesterday, this book will make you feel right at home and conjure your own memories of childhood. And if you’re anything like me, it will probably make you want to call your dad and say, “I love you.”
Krystle Goodman is a crazy cat lady, who loves to drink exorbitant amounts of coffee, and read a shocking amount of books. She lives in Benton with her husband Josh, her son Roman, and their two cats Roxanne and Abby. When she isn’t reading, you’ll find her cooking, painting, or watching true crime shows.
