Book: Remembering Jaime
Author: Nichole Van
My Rating: ALL THE STARS
Listen up bookworms, we’re jumping right in today because Nichole Van wrote a perfect book and I have a lot to say.
I have been waiting for the conclusion of the Brotherhood of the Black Tartan series for a hot minute, y’all. And thanks to Instagram, I’ve actually been able to message Nichole about my love for these books. (Modern Technology! What a time to be alive!) Bless her heart for putting up with my commentary. She’s an angel. In anticipation of binge reading this book, I actually took a personal day from work and sat at Koffee With a Kause for over four hours reading with my sister. No lie. Reading is a real reason I’ve taken off of work. I flew through the pages and it was everything I wanted!
Now, if you haven’t read the rest of this series, there’s no way for me to review this without giving up spoilers. So, here’s your warning. Stop now if spoilers aren’t really your thing.
Last chance.
Ok. Y’all remember in previous books when we found out Jaime was actually a girl named Eilidh, and she was secretly married to Kieran, and she was “increasing” (which is an adorable way to say “pregnant”)??? And then we found out that she was still alive? And then Kieran tracked her down and SHE HAD AMNESIA FOR THE LAST SIX YEARS AND DIDN’T REMEMBER BEING MARRIED… Well, if you didn’t remember, now you’re caught up and ready for alllllllllll the angst. ALL. OF. IT.
There’s plenty to go around. You’ve got Violet and Ewan about to have a baby. Our boys (plus Jaime/Eilidh) are all under investigation for the sinking of The Minerva. Jaime has no memory of marrying Kieran, in fact she kind of hates him. All while he is dyingggggg to just be husband and wife. He wants her to regain her memories mostly to prove she isn’t guilty of murder, but also – and most importantly – so she will kiss him on the mouth and remember how much they love each other! It’s a lot to cram into one book, but somehow Nichole pulled it off.
She was breaking my heart imagining poor Kieran looking like a sad puppy every time Jaime shut him down. And she shut him down a lot. Nichole really makes us suffer before she makes it all better. As usual, Nichole surprisingly tackles really serious issues with her fictional characters. In this case, Kieran and Jaime both have to process a miscarriage. The subject was handled with care and was well written, but I do feel like I should let you know as a trigger warning that it is a very emotional part of this story.
In the end Nichole wrapped up the story perfectly. Everything wasn’t fairytale perfect, but our faves were happy and healthy. And the epilogue was the total opposite of angsty. It was the perfect contrast to the emotional roller coaster that was the rest of the book. So, here I am once again highly recommending a Nichole Van book to you. If you read it and need to send an ALL CAPS message, my DMs are always open on Instagram. @book.worm.diaries
