Book: Enchanted Misadventures With Great Aunt Poppy
Author: Hallie Christensen
My Rating: 5 Spooky Stars
I found the most adorable middle grade book for October. Seriously, if you know a Jr. Bookworm who likes adventure stories, this is the perfect October read for them! It’s action packed and heartwarming at the same time. I basically smiled the entire time I was reading it.
The Alexander children are spending Christmas with their Great Aunt Poppy and they’re not happy about it. Her house is perpetually decorated like a Halloween store, she smells funny, and they have a sneaking suspicion that she’s a witch. They only have to survive for a week, but that proves to be easier said than done. When wishing potion goes awry, a talking cat named Merlin give sardonic advice, and a werewolf lurks in the woods the Alexander children have to stick together.
I loved, loved, LOVED this story, y’all. I didn’t grow up with siblings close in age, but I did have a ton of cousins and the family dynamic Hallie captured in words was spot on. Ava, the oldest, was the adult of the group. Nolan, the middle sibling, was the daredevil. And Charlotte, the youngest, was the adorable scaredy-cat. Didn’t we all play these rolls at some point as we were growing up? And Merlin the sarcastic talking cat? I want one. Some of the most quotable lines in the book are either by Merlin or about Merlin.
“For a talking cat, this one was kind of rude. But then, weren’t all cats rude?”
As a cat owner, I can confirm. If mine could talk she would be the rudest.
The children forge a great bond with Aunt Poppy, and they also learn a lot about courage during their stay. I found it a delightful read even as an adult. Enchanted Misadventures With Great Aunt Poppy releases on October 12!
