After talking to locals and employees at a Benton hardware store over the weekend, it sounded like it would be closing soon. Sutherland’s confirms that is the case. The first Sutherland’s began in 1917. Maybe someone can help in the comments to tell how long exactly this location of the chain has served Benton.
The reason for their move was a lease negotiation that didn’t work out, according to one employee. The store will have its last day on Saturday, July 31st, and will distribute its leftover stock to other nearby locations, such as Hot Springs, Fort Smith and Stuttgart.
Just a note from this writer – many times when the rent goes up enough to drive a current renter away, there is already a new renter interested in the property. We will follow this story to tell what’s next for the property at 1209 Military Road in Benton.
