Steve & Lisa Spencer give tips and conditions for local fishing holes in Saline County in this column. See more info about Steve and Lisa at the end.
Saline River – Bass fishing has been great this week for customers using brooder minnows, crawdad colored crank baits and small plastics. A few have been catching a walleye or two on brooder minnows as well. Catfish are biting minnows, gold fish, black saltys and chicken livers. Crappie have been biting pretty well on #6 minnows in deep holes and backwaters. Bream will bite crickets and red worms almost anytime on the river and if you keep fishing you’ll occasionally get a stringer of keepers.
Sunset Lake – Crappie fishing has been good for customers using #6 minnows, pink minnows and jigs tipped with pink minnows or crappie nibbles. Bass have been hitting live minnows, Carolina rigged plastics and crank baits. Catfish are biting night crawlers, minnows, chicken livers and bait shrimp. Bream are starting to bite a little better on crickets and worms.
Lake Norrell – Crappie have been biting well for a few customers using pink minnows. One reports catching some dandys in 40 feet of water near the channel. Bass fishing has been decent according to reports from some locals. Minnows, crank baits and spinner baits are working best right before dark. Catfish are biting minnows, gold fish, night crawlers and black saltys. Bream fishing has been slow so far but we know Lake Norrell holds some big ones and they’ll be hitting crickets and red worms soon. Don’t wait too long to give em a try.
Bishop Park Ponds – Crappie are biting pink and #4 minnows. Catfish have been biting minnows, night crawlers and chicken livers. Bass are biting fair on live minnows, crank baits and small spinner baits. Bream fishing has been fair with crickets and red worms.
Lake Winona – Crappie fishing has been good with #6 and #12 minnows as well and various jigs. They’re still pretty deep and we haven’t heard of any limits being caught but some have been good big crappie. Bass are biting minnows, Carolina rigged plastics, lipless crank baits and jigs. Catfish are biting fair on chicken livers, night crawlers and minnows. Bream fishing should be improving but we’ve had no recent reports from Winona.
