Sheridan Schools is looking to implement a 4.7 mill tax increase through a special election January 8th, to fund a new middle school for East End, a new library and media center and an existing elementary school in East End, and a fine arts center for an existing middle school in Sheridan.
Some things you need to know:
1. Sheridan is in Grant County. East End is in Saline County. East End is a s community and so close to the county line that it is in the Sheridan School District. East End is actually closer as the crow flies to any school district in Saline than it is to Sheridan Schools, however, there is better road access to Sheridan (by 167/Arch Street Pike).
2. Saline County millage elections have [ahem] not gone well recently.
a. Benton Schools wanted an elementary on the north side of the Interstate and improvements to the existing junior high and high school.
b. Bryant Schools wanted to expand the already overcrowded high school.
c. Harmony Grove Schools wanted a football team.
3. Grant County millage elections have not gone well recently either. Actually, this same matter went to election September 18th and was turned down by over 54 percent. Over 54 percent when the new elementary school will eliminate a 17-mile one-way bus ride for kids who might be as young as five years old.
I hope they get it right this time.
