According to Lt. Jeffery Silk, over the past 24 hours, the Saline County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) has taken reports where citizens were contacted by a subject identifying himself as an SCSO deputy. The fictitious deputy tells the victim that court records show they owe a sum of money and it must be paid immediately.
THIS IS A SCAM!
The SCSO’s Criminal Investigation Division (CID) has been alerted as well as the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.
“We are taking steps to identify the culprit but want the citizens of Saline County to be aware of this activity. We urge citizens not to be fooled by these deceiving crooks and to please call 911 if they are contacted,” stated Silk.
Below is an email Silk received from a citizen:
My wife received a call saying it was from your office stating she had a warrant. She was told to go to Kroger and obtain Green Dot cards as form of payment. She gave the individuals the numbers off the cards and after checking with your office was told it was a scam. She forked over $1976.00 as she thought she was going to jail. They told her she had missed jury duty and had a Failure to Appear. I need to sit down with someone and provide information as to not let anyone else go through this. My number is XXXXXXX. Thanks for what you and your staff does for our community.
The following is the voicemail you get when you call the scam number.
