Learn about the speaker:
Mary Deere is a long-time resident of Benton. Her parents moved their family from Greenbriar, Arkansas to Benton when she was only six weeks old. Her brother and sisters, Jim Love, Jackie Sample and Judy Drennan also are residents of Benton. Mary graduated from Benton High School in 1952 and from St. Vincent Infirmary School of Nursing in Little Rock in 1955. She served 25 years as a registered nurse.
She and her late husband, Jay Deere, made Benton their home and reared their two sons, Ron and Steve in Benton. Ron and his family are residents of Conway. Steve and his family are residents of Benton. Jay’s career took them to two tours of duty in Suriname, South America.
Mary is a member of First United Methodist Church, Saline County History and Heritage Society, and the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), Provincia de La Sal Chapter located in Benton. She is an Honorary State Regent having served as Arkansas’ State Regent from 2014 – 2016.
Mary’s experience in the DAR reinforced her love of County, History, and Education. One of her interests is that of the significance of service of the Navajo Code Talkers during World War II. These true Patriots played an important role to secure communication of critical information during a time of war. Their heroic efforts and contribution helped to ensure our military success, and their service must be recognized and remembered.
