First ever Sardis Person of the Year, John “Big John” Cohen, pictured in the middle, with his dog Sissy at his side, along with children from the community.
One Sardis resident had the idea to start a tradition of having locals vote to choose a Person of the Year. It was Roy Simmons who came up with it and he came back with the results of the vote – overwhelmingly for John “Big John” Cohen. Cohen is known to people in Sardis and beyond as someone who steps up to take care of things. Everyone in the community knows him and he is beloved and integral part of the area.
A ceremony was held Friday, December 15 at the Sardis Community Center. Residents pitched in with prizes to go along with the title.
As John stated in the Sardis Community of Arkansas Facebook group, there gifts were, “A nice wicker basket, fresh eggs, fresh loaf of bread, home made soap all from Fuzzy Micro Farm, a jar of honey from Cotton’s vegetable stand, an awesome clock from Bryant Small Engine, a box of milk bones for Sissy, coupons for free pizza from Pizza For Life and a prized wooden plaque.”
