Khaleel Siddiq of Benton, pled guilty to Impairing the Operation of a Vital Public Facility today before the Honorable Bobby McCallister. Siddiq was sentenced to serve ten years in the Arkansas Department of Corrections. Siddiq was an inmate at the Saline County Jail on February 20, 2016, when he intentionally broke a sprinkler head in his cell causing the jail to flood.
Siddiq was housed in an upstairs cell. When jailors opened his cell door, the water from the damaged sprinkler flooded the lower level as well. Before the water was shut off completely, almost the entire jail was flooded. Jail maintenance personnel explained that the water in the sprinkler system was highly pressurized and that the water coming from a damaged sprinkler head is like a damaged fire hydrant.
Prosecuting Attorney Ken Casady stated that it is hard to imagine how disruptive this act of vandalism is to the operation of the jail. “Jail personnel were called away from their normal duties to deal with the water and relocation of prisoners, personal property was damaged, and the citizens of Saline County had to pay for the manpower and equipment to repair the sprinkler system. This type of senseless vandalism will not be tolerated.”
