James D. (J. D.) Chambers, age 92, of Paron passed away Wednesday, February 15, 2017. He was born September 7, 1924 in Greenbrier, Arkansas. J.D. was retired from the Saline County Road Dept. a member of North Fork Missionary Baptist Church and a W.W. II Army Veteran. He was preceded in death by his parents, Eldred Chambers and Lettie Garrison Chambers, wife, Delpha M. Chambers, son, Robert Louis Chambers, brother, Richard Chambers. Shirley Ann Cloud, 77, of Benton left this world Feb. 17, 2017. She was born in LaGrange, AR on July 4, 1939 to Clifton and Sally Forbes. She loved animals and always had 1 or more squirrels coming to her backdoor wanting to be fed. She loved being outside, be it mowing, tending to plants or just sitting around the picnic table talking to family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Billy Forbes, sister, Lula Bell Rippberger, two great-grandbabies, Oliver and Aria Orr, 1 niece and 1 nephew. Mary K. Abbott, age 71, of Bauxite, passed away Friday, February 17, 2017. She was born November 30, 1945 in Roswell, New Mexico to the late A. L. Joslin, Sr. and Flora Christine Joslin. Mrs. Abbott was a member of West Bauxite Missionary Baptist Church. Jane R. Wilkins, 85 of Bryant, passed away February 18, 2017. She was born July 30, 1931 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to the late Gene and Billie Barnhill Reynolds. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Benton and Wesley Sunday School Class. Jane was a volunteer at Saline Memorial Hospital from 2000 until 2017. She logged over 5,433 hours of volunteer service. Jane was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Bobby Reynolds, grandson, Matthew Taylor and husband of 62 years, Melvin Wilkins. She is survived by her daughters, Mary Jane and Don Dove , Maggie and Jim Taylor; granddaughters, Claire and Jorge Marron, Paige Taylor, sister, Billigene Pedigo, brother, Jim and Linda Reynolds, special relatives, M.L. and Mary Ann Wilkins, numerous nieces and nephews and their families. Michael Ray Stevens of Benton, AR, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on February 20th, 2017. Mike was born in Elizabethtown, KY on October 23rd, 1958. He grew up in Kentucky, graduated from Jeffersontown High School and continued on to receive a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Engineering from the University of Kentucky. He also attended Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Ft. Worth, Texas. Mike was married to Shannon Stevens on November 21st, 2009. Mike is survived by his wife, Shannon; his four children, Kaitlin Stevens, Jillian Stevens, Landon Stevens, and Selah Stevens; his two step-children, Austin Trusty and Hudson Trusty; his parents Cecil Stevens of Frankfort, KY and Eleanor Stevens of Benton, AR; and many other family members and friends. Mike is preceded in death by his brothers, Dennis Stevens and Roger Stevens. Mike adored his wife and family—they were his pride and joy. He worked as an Engineer at Molex in Maumelle, AR. He was an avid student of the Bible, enjoyed daily reading and ministering to others. Mike was passionate about his lay ministry, Next Step–the 12 steps to the Freedom of Christ. He was active in his church, Celebration Baptist in Haskell. Mike was a man of many talents–6 and 12 string guitar, singing, cooking smoked meats, and wood-working including building custom furniture. Mike had a sharp intellect–he possessed several patents on his inventions. Mike had a kind heart, and he will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. Robbie Jean Mobley, 59 of Benton, passed away February 20, 2017. She was born to Robert Ford and Barbara Drake on September 29, 1957 in Benton, Arkansas. Robbie was a member of West Bauxite Missionary Baptist Church. She was a unique woman, always expected the unexpected, who had a bold personality and loved her family and sweets. Robbie loved to have fun and drive fast. She was an eclectic piece that fit perfectly in life’s crazy puzzle. Robbie was preceded in death by her father, Robert Ford. Damon Glen Massey, 59, of Benton, Ar., passed away February 20, 2017. Damon was born on May 3, 1957 to the late Elouise Avera and Clyde Massey. Damon was one of the kindest men anyone could hope to meet and he never met a stranger. He made countless friends over the years serving the public working for Adams Pest Control and later for the Water Department of the City of Benton. Damon also enjoyed spending time at the horse races in Hot Springs or doting on his grandchildren, Tinin and Sadie Williams, whom he loved and adored. Damon was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Cathy Massey. Donald M Best of Hot Springs Village died Saturday February 11, 2017 at the age of 91. He was born June 22, 1925 in Goldthwaite, TX. Donald spent 21 years serving in the US Airforce and 16 years in the FAA. He retired to Hot Springs Village in 1982. He was an avid golfer and spent time helping rate and grade courses in Arkansas, the Philippines, and Japan, as well as organizing the Amateur Golf Tournament in Arkansas. He is survived by his wife, Gay Best; children, Donna Ebert, Francis “Bud” Best, Mike Best, and Randy Best; stepsons Dale Phillips and Wade Phillips; and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. Nicholas Theodore Oana, of Hot Springs Village, died Sunday February 19, 2017 at the age of 86. He was born July 10, 1930 in Detroit, MI. With a Master’s degree in education, he devoted much of his time to enriching the lives of others. During his career, he realized a passion for sharing his life experiences with young people. He also enjoyed traveling with his wife, Gloria, to whom he was married to for sixty-two years. Together they traveled all over the United States and to 110 countries. He is survived by his wife, Gloria Oana; Godson, Scott Becker (Christine); Niece, Nancy Fryer Smith; Dear Friends Teresa Ross, Mark Tucker, Sandra Zanella, Judi Jason and many, many other friends. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Nicolae and Olivia Oana. Robert Roy Throckmorton, Jr, of Hot Springs Village, died Wednesday February 22, 2017 at the age of 93. He was born June 7, 1923 in Muskogee, OK. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Nadine Hall Throckmorton; Virginia Mae Throckmorton, his wife of 55 years; Sisters, Joan Shepard and Betty Kritikos and half-brother, William Herrick. He is survived by his Daughter, Linda S. Throckmorton; Sons, Robert P. Throckmorton (Patty) and Mark T. Throckmorton (Rita) ; grandchildren, Loren M. Shaft (Garrett), Sean T. Throckmorton (Sophie), Jason Throckmorton (Christine), Amanda Throckmorton (Lee), Alicia Luckhardt (Pacer); great grandchildren, Celina Throckmorton, Mykayla Throckmorton and Keaton Throckmorton, Cheyenne Luckhardt, Austin Luckhardt and Cierra Luckhardt, Tristin Bennett, Kieran Bennett, Grace Loomis, Levi Shaft and one great great grandchild. He attended high school in Muskogee, OK and went on to attend George Washington University in Washington D.C. He served in the U.S. Navy during WW2 and the Korean War. Total active service five years and active Reserve for three years. He served 30 months in the South Pacific during WW2 (Hawaii, Guadalcanal and New Caledonia and on the USS North Carolina.) He worked as a Cryptologist (Communications Intelligence) first with the U.S. Navy and then as a civilian with the National Security Agency. Posted to tours of duty in Japan, England and Colorado. A member of the Naval Cryptologic Veterans Association (NCVA) over 25 years and an early member of the Navy’s Cryptologic efforts. He retired from Federal Service in 1978. He was a bowling enthusiast since the age of 5. He enjoyed golfing with the “Gish” golf group in Hot Springs Village for many years. He also held an amateur radio operators (HAM) license for more than 50 years. A genealogy buff, he spent many years researching and compiling family histories and authored a book entitled “My Life, Remembered – a Memoir, published in 2004. He belonged to a number of clubs and organizations: he was a 50 year Mason and Shriner, Member of HSV Shrine Club, National Sojourners and a past member of Whittington Lodge #365. Past President of HSV Breakfast Lions Club, past President of National Active and Retired federal Employees (NARFE), early member of Genealogy Club and charter member of VFW Post 10483 in Hot Springs Village. A memorial service will be held on Monday, February 27, 2017 at CedarVale Funeral Home located at 200 Minorca Rd, Hot Springs Village, AR, Rev. Bill Bailey presiding. Larry Edsel Cross, born on April 23, 1941 in Denmark, Arkansas to Ray and Velva Cross, answered his final call on February 19, 2017 in Bryant, Arkansas. Larry was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Ray Cross and Dwane Cross, his step-father Harrison Davis, his infant son Joseph Allen Cross, and his grand-daughter Cheyenne Rose McManigal. Larry is mourned by his loving wife of 56 years, Martha A. Melva Scarberry 68, of Mabelvale passed away on February 20, 2017 with her family by her side. She was born on October 24, 1948 to the late, Melvin and Minnie Harrell in Eureka, California. Melva was a wonderful mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. Her life was centered on her family. She is preceded in death by her parents and her late husband, of 40 years, Henry Scarberry. Kayla loved her daughter, Aliyah and her life was centered around her. She loved animals, especially cats, was very artsy and loved music, playing jokes on friends and making everyone smile. Mark Douglas “Marco” Moore, 60, of Benton, Arkansas passed away February 11, 2017. He was born on February 26, 1956 in Lincoln, Nebraska to Marlo and Lois Moore. Marco was a people person, he loved spending time with his family, his dogs, listening to music and relaxing around a bonfire. He also enjoyed mudding, off roading and drag racing. Marco was best known around the track for his vintage Camaro, “Ole Blackie”. Jimmy L. Warren, 70, of Bryant, Arkansas passed away, February 19, 2017. He was born in Lake City, Arkansas on May 2, 1946 to Louetta and James Warren. Norman Ray Beth, 76, of Alexander went to be with the Lord February13, 2017. He was born October 25, 1940 in Pittsburg, Kansas. He was preceded in death by his parents Ray R. Beth and May E. Allen and a sister Mary Beth Hervey. Mr. Beth was a member of Abundant Life Assembly of God for seven years and a member of NRA. Mr. Beth was retired from Cooper Camerom where he worked for 37 years as a machinest. He is survived by his wife, Ann Crabtrey Beth, his children, Debra Vermillion of Bryant and Larry Wayne Beth of Holy Oak, Colorado, two grandchildren and two great grandchildern, and a host of relatives and close friends. Florene Tyler, 92, of Benton went to her Heavenly home Tuesday, February 14, 2017. She was born June 4, 1924 and was a member of Sharon Missionary Baptist Church. She was married in 1944 to Kenneth Tyler, Sr. when they met at the Deaf School in Little Rock. They were owners of The Enterprise Shoe Shop for over 50 years. She loved to sew, cook, travel, and smile. She loved her family and friends and being around people. Florene was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and by a cherished daughter, Dorothy Spradlin. She leaves behind two daughters, Bonnie Tallent and Ann Turbyfill (Van); one son, Kenneth Tyler, Jr. (Carolyn) all of Benton, and eight grandchildren, Cheryl Otwell (Eddie), Debora Midgett (Greg), Melinda Tudor (Paul), Tim Pruitt (Jennifer), Mark Pruitt (Tifaney), Amy Wright (Darby), Bliss Kelly (Josh), and Jaye Spradlin. She was the Mamaw to 15 great grandkids and 8 great-great grand babies. Nancy K. Rose, 66 of Benton passed away February 15, 2017 in Little Rock. She was born June 8, 1950 in Little Rock to the late Rev. William R. and Anna (Smith) Gifford. She was a member of Coronado Baptist Church in Hot Springs Village. Nancy served and ministered to others as an administrative assistant, piano teacher, and an accomplished piano accompanist to many throughout her life. She was preceded in death by her parents. Survivors include her husband, Richard, of the home; daughters Ambi and Jay Gordon of Crowley, TX, Melode and Stephen Strawn of San Antonio, TX; son, David and Lori Rose of Benton; brother Bill Gifford of Benton; six grandchildren and two Great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends. Patricia Ann Holicer, age 84, of the Point View community, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus, on February 20, 2017. She was born July 23, 1932. She was a member of Glen Rose Missionary Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband, Stanley Wayne Holicer, of 67 years; raised four amazing children, Regina (Jim) Burks , Tim (Sheila) Holicer, Amy (Larry) Whitfield of the Point View community, and Paula (Dan) Hooks of Slovak, AR. She helped raise nine grandchildren, Michael (Sonya) Burks, Rodney (Jullie) Burks, Jacob (Sara) Burks, Luke (LeAnn) Hooks, Ben Hooks, Ethan (Sady) Holicer, Clay Holicer, Emily (Joe) Peters, and Heather (Trevor) DeLaney; 14 great-grandchildren, and countless more people she adopted as her own. She was a loving and kind person who always liked to share her Christ-like values. She made everyone that came to her home feel like a member of her family. Some of her grandchildren’s best memories were of her making sure they were raised in church and portrayed the love of Christ to others. She also taught them how to shoot the basketball. A grandson recalls enjoying Mama Pat recapping his Friday night football games, looking at her March Madness bracket, and making a group of rodeo friends feel welcome in her home. Another grandchild commented, When so many friends and family came to visit, the love they felt was nothing new in Papa Stanley and Mama Pat’s home. Patricia graduated valedictorian from Glen Rose School in 1950 where she was a star basketball player. She remained a staunch supporter, and number one fan of the Glen Rose Beavers.
Gail Travis Burton, 88, of Benton passed away Wednesday, February 22, 2017 at his home. He was born January 4, 1929 in Temple, OK to the late William L. and Vela Ina Burton. He was also preceded in death by his oldest brother, M/Sgt. Wendell L. Burton and older sister, Lauretta Burton Reynolds. Mr. Burton was a deacon at First Baptist Church of Benton, a U.S. Army veteran having served in Korea 1946-48, and had retired as a Fire Protection Specialist. He was also a Master Mason, a life-member of the California PTA, member of the Los Angeles Fire Protection Forum, Society of Fire Protection Engineers, the Missouri Cowboy Poet’s Association, and a charter member of the Academy of Western Artist. Since 1987 his poetry has been featured in The Tombstone Epitaph, the National Newspaper of the Old West. He has written from 400-450 cowboy poems. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Barbara Burton; five children, Terri Baird (Victor) of Benton, Paul Burton of Fawnskin, CA, John Burton of Benton, Joel Burton (Karen) of South Plainfield, NJ, and Leonard Burton of Little Rock; 15 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and many friends. A time of visitation will be held from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. Saturday morning, February 25th at Selph Hall of First Baptist Church in Benton with a memorial service immediately following at 11:00 a.m. officiated by Dr. Richard Grant. Doris H. Taplin lost her long battle with Alzheimer’s disease and died peacefully on February 16, 2017 at the age of 89. She was born on January 7, 1928 in the Fairplay community. She was a member of Temple Baptist Church in Little Rock. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dewey Taplin; father, James (Jim) Floyd; mother, June Horn Floyd; sisters Leota Warford, Verta Bridges, and Sarah Riggan; and brothers Wesley and Leslie Floyd. She is survived by her son, Glenn Taplin and his wife Becky of San Antonio, Texas; three grandchildren, Allison Taplin Thyng and husband John, of Scott Air Force Base, Illinois, Amanda Taplin Willett, and Ryan Taplin and wife Ashley, all of San Antonio, Texas; five great-grandchildren, Brandon Williams, Caden Willett, Cole Willett, Roe Taplin, and Madeline Bryan. Brick Smith, 49, of Bryant, Arkansas passed away February 19, 2017. He was born September 8, 1967, in McAlester, Oklahoma to the late Johnny Roy and Linda Beard Smith. Brick was a member of The Church at Rock Creek. He was a Certified Diabetic Educator and licensed registered nurse. Brick loved extreme sports including scuba diving, skydiving, mountain biking, snow skiing, and fitness. He has influenced many people to live life to its’ fullest through health, sports, and wellness. He was a kind, persevering person who dedicated his life to others and always took life “by the horns”. Brick is preceded in death by his parents; maternal grandparents, Otha and Louise Beard; paternal grandparents, Roy and Gladys Smith. Patsy June Rousey, 85, of Benton, Arkansas passed away February 20, 2017. She was born May 15, 1932 in Caddo Mills, Texas to the late Lee and Bessie Applegate Rousey. Patsy was of the Church of Christ faith. She enjoyed going to the Benton Senior Center every day for over twenty-two years. Her favorite hobby was crafting, including embroidery. Ben Jairt Bolton, Jr., 68, of Bauxite, Arkansas passed away February 20, 2017. He was born November 24, 1948 in Little Rock, Arkansas to Ben Jairt Bolton, Sr., and the late Johnnie Lee Sutton-Waters. Ben served in the United States Army and worked as a shipping clerk. He enjoyed gardening, riding and working on motorcycles, hunting, fishing, and wood working-creating hand carved canes. Fred D. Melton, 85, of Benton, Arkansas passed away February 22, 2017. He was born September 17, 1931 in McCrory, Arkansas to the late Clyde and Mary Shankle Melton. Fred retired after twenty-three years as a Senior Master Sergeant serving in the United States Air Force during the Korean and Vietnam Wars and was awarded the National Defense and Good Conduct Medals. He also worked at the Mini-Mart in Benton and in later years drove across the United States for Everett GMC. Fred was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Drew Nicole Melton; brothers, Perry Melton and Joffrey Melton; sisters, Mary Koga Spencer, Connie Gardner, and Terry Melton.
