Paul A. Cloud, age 50, of Benton, passed away Friday, July 21, 2017. He was born April 14, 1967 in Little Rock, Arkansas. Paul was a restaurant manager at Kentucky Fried Chicken and a member of Sardis United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death his mother, Myra F. Cloud and a brother, Billy Earl Cloud. He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Karen Cloud; daughter, Myra Cloud and fiancée Mack Williams all of Benton; father, Billy D. Nancy Sue Bowie Elrod, age 84, of Bryant/Benton, Arkansas and wife of the late Bill B. Elrod; passed away peacefully and smiled into the face of Jesus on July 24, 2017 with her family at her side. She was born in Bryant, Arkansas on June 28, 1933 to the late Luther Lee Bowie, Sr. and Creola Sue Harper Bowie. Nancy is survived by her daughter, Amy Solomon and her husband Andy, Amy’s son Jeremy Campbell and his wife Christy, and their children Casey and Conner; son, Tim Elrod and his wife Lesa, their daughter Kristin Elrod, their son, Cole Elrod and his wife Candice and their children Kolin, Gage and Makaila all of whom live in Benton. She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Don Elrod and wife Bonnie; sister-in-law, Peggy Elrod Bengston; nephews, Mike Bowie and wife Janelle, Kurt Goble and wife Debbie and other nieces and nephews whom she adored: Steve, Stan, Troy, Tracy, Greg, Kim, David, Doug, Donna and all their spouses and family. Nancy was preceded in death by her sweet husband, Bill; brother, Lee Bowie Jr. and wife Pat; nephew, Murry Bowie; sister, Billie Goble Ferguson and husband Angus; her father and mother-in-law, J.P. and Evie Elrod; brother-in-law, Tullis Elrod and wife Jean; brother-in-law, Pete Elrod and wife Joanne and brother-in-law, Virgil Bengston. Special aunts whom she also cared for, Ida Sheffield, Hazel Stewart and Kate Kimbrough who were all like second mothers to her. Nancy grew up in Bryant, was a member of Bryant First United Methodist Church and attended Bryant Schools. She remained close to those wonderful friends throughout her life. That’s where she met the love of her life, Bill. They married July 20, 1952 while Bill was in the US Air Force and they lived in San Francisco, California and Cheyenne, Wyoming until Bill left the Air Force. They started their family and lived in Bryant until Bill’s death in 1981. One of Nancy’s proudest accomplishments was serving as Saline County Tax Collector and Bill was able to see her accomplish her goal. She was the first woman elected as Tax Collector in 1981 and served until she retired in 1999. As her family remembers, one of her favorite sayings was “anything worth doing is worth doing right”. Anyone that knew Nancy could guarantee that she put her heart, soul, and endless energy into serving the citizens of Saline County during those years. She credited her wonderful staff, which were too many to name, with her years of success and cherished each one of them till her death. Nancy was a long-time member of the Association of Arkansas Counties and made lifetime friends with many wonderful people around the State of Arkansas. She was also part of the group that established the ArSTAR program for renewing car tags online. Nancy was active in her church at Bryant and was so proud to be able to give the dedication speech when Bryant First United Methodist Church was built at its present location on Reynolds Road. After Nancy moved to Benton, she transferred her membership to Benton First United Methodist Church and made many friends there and was active as well. She loved to give her time to others, whether it was volunteering at St. Vincent or at Habitat for Humanity. There was no one that was prouder of Saline County than Nancy was. Trey Hesselbein, age 22, of Benton passed away Tuesday July 25, 2017. He was born September 20, 1994 in Little Rock. Trey was preceded in death by his parents, Scotty and Teresa Turman Hesselbein. James Randall Shelton, 64 of Benton, passed away July 26, 2017. He was born February 25, 1953 in Benton to Virgil Henry and Nellie Marie Wheeler Shelton. James was a member of Ridgecrest Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. He was co-owner of BWJ Electric and a Master Electrician. James was a loving, faithful husband, dad and “Papaw.” He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Bud Shelton and step dad, Argus Hardin. Juanita Ferguson, 87 of Benton, passed away July 27, 2017. She was born October 8, 1929 in Pottsville, Arkansas to the late Walter D. and Cordelis Venable Duvall. Juanita was retired from the Timex Corp. after 35 years in 2006. She was married to Jack Ferguson in July of 1947. Juanita enjoyed going out to visit and showing up always with food and going to her favorite Chinese Food restaurant. She loved taking Aunt Mildred around when she could not get out and working in the yard and decorating her home. Patsy L Garner, 85 of Benton, passed away July 21, 2017. She was born in Pleasant Plains, AR on July 17, 1932 to the late Boyce and Jesse Caplener. She was married to the late Henry Carlton Garner. She was preceded in death by her two brothers and their wives Kenneth (Verna Mae) Caplener and Doyle (Lageda) Caplener. She was an educator for 38 years and loved being a teacher, and she could tell you anything about any animal. She enjoyed college football and she was “MomPat” to family and to all the kids that ever came over with her grandkids. She loved to play poker with her grandkids, especially Texas Hold’em. She couldn’t wait each year to get her HOOTEN’S magazine for her birthday. She is survived by her son Gary, his wife Brenda, grandkids: Reid and his wife Alisa, Nick, and Jake, and two great-grandkids: Ryleigh and Rhett. Alice ”Faye” Chastain, 86, of Benton passed away Wed, July 26, 2017. She was born December 7, 1930 in Stamps, AR to the late Wm Morgan and Alice Fitzgerald. She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years Wm Dorcie Chastain; in addition to her parents, four brothers and four sisters. Survivors include one daughter; Brenda A. Womack and husband Richard of Benton; two grandsons, Wm Richard Womack and wife Brandi of Arkadelphia and Brian Womack and wife Kristi of Benton; eleven great-grandchildren, Wm Richard Jr., Rhett, Ross, Reid, Bella, Maria, Rachael, Avery, Drake, Wyatt, and namesake Emory Faye; four nieces and two nephews, and a host of special friends and acquaintances. She has been a member of the family of God since the 3rd grade and is currently a church member at First Baptist Benton and the loving Deborah Sunday School Class. Her ministries included teaching children’s Sunday School classes for 20 years; playing the piano and singing in adult Sanctuary Choirs throughout her lifetime; and actively participating in Bible Study Fellowship for years. She also enjoyed a 50+ year career as a beautician retiring at the age of 84. Faye, aka Gran, deeply loved and faithfully prayed for her grand and great-grandchildren. In the families’ sadness as we said goodbye in this world, we also rejoiced that there are dear family, friends, and her Savior joyously proclaiming ”here she comes.” She has left behind a rich legacy of faith and a living model of a faithful Christian walk. Jessie Baxter Ray, age 94, passed away July 28, 2017. She was born in Flintville, Tennessee in 1923. She was preceded in death by her dear husband, Sam, of 67 years, her father and mother, John and Bessie Baxter, and two brothers, James and Charles Baxter. Jessie left behind two loving daughters and husbands, April Esner (Ed) of Scottsdale, Arizona, and Patti Fulcher (Ronald) of Sugar Land, Texas; four grandchildren, April Glincher, Bryan Esner (Meredith), Ryan Esner, and Julie Esner; and seven great grandchildren. She graduated from Hampshire High School and received a Teachers degree from Middle Tennessee State Teachers College in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. She taught in Tennessee for two years, and did substitute teaching after moving to Arkansas. Jessie loved her family dearly and was a great lover of nature. She enjoyed golfing, snow skiing, fishing, and travel. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Benton and a member of the Deborah Sunday School Class, and a member of the Morning Glories Choir. Patricia A. Farish 84, of Benton passed away July 30, 2017 in Benton. She was born March 2, 1933 in Morrilton, AR to the late Carl and Molly Peters. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Farish; sons, Mike and Allen Farish; and sister Karolyn Taylor. Patricia and late husband Charlie “Charles” owned and operated Charlie’s Auto Parts, along with Patricia being a book keeper at Union Bank. She was also a faithful member of Our Lady of Fatima in Benton, AR. Billie Wayne Poe, age 72, passed away peacefully in his sleep, July 24, 2017, in Marianna, Arkansas and woke up in Heaven. He is finally free. Robert Clyde Whittecar, Jr., 77, of Benton, Arkansas passed away July 24, 2017 surrounded by his family. He was born January 15, 1940 in Little Rock, Arkansas to the late Robert C. and Lois Geraldine Brown Whittecar, Sr. Robert was a truck driver and worked for J.B. Hunt for many years. He loved camping and fishing and could always be found at the lake. Robert enjoyed dancing and often danced with his daughters. He liked going out to eat and watching old western movies. Most of all, Robert loved his family. He kept in touch with them by calling often to make sure they were doing ok and to let them know how much he cared and loved them. Robert was preceded in death by his parents and son, Robert Lynn Whittecar. Sue Burks Long passed away on July 25, 2017, in the ever present care of her family. Sue was born in Pulaski County to parents, Jesse Lemuel (Lem) Burks and Vera Ruth Rogers Burks. She was proud to be one of twelve children born to her parents. She enjoyed a wonderful life being part of a fun, strong, loving, and large family. She was a member of Benton’s First Church of the Nazarene. She was retired from Fitness Unlimited and later retired as Business Manager of Birch Tree Communities. She was preceded in death by her parents; her father-in-law, Floyd Long Sr.; mother-in-law, Hazel Long; an infant sister, Margie Ruth Burks; beloved sisters, Bonnie Burks Garner, Joyce Burks Gibson, Eva Burks Cox; brothers-in-law, John B. Garner, George O. Johnson, and John Fred Chunn, Sr. Sue is survived by her dear husband of 60 years, Floyd “Sonny” Long. Letty “Sue” Curtis, 85, of Benton, Arkansas passed away July 30, 2017. She was born May 12, 1932 in Caglesville, Arkansas to the late Ross and Vera Bell. Sue has lived in Benton for over sixty-five years. She was a graduate of Bryant High School and was a member of Sharon Missionary Baptist Church. Sue owned and operated several family businesses including Curtis Ice Company, Curtis Grocery, and George’s Towing. Sue loved her family and opened her home to over thirty-four foster children. Preceding Sue in death are her loving husband, George H. Curtis, Jr. whom she married on November 5, 1952; parents, Ross and Vera Bell; son, Steven Howard Curtis; two daughters, Sherrilyn Kay Glenn and Karen Denise Higgins; granddaughter, Haylee Higgins; two brothers, Wayne Bell and Robert “Bob” Bell; and sister, Lela Graddy. She leaves to cherish her memory son, Michael George Curtis; daughter, Tonya Renee Johnson and husband Larry; son-in-law, Windell Higgins; grandchildren: Carmen Slate and husband Kevin, Thaddeus Curtis and wife Rebecca, Evan Hicks and husband Jeremy, Jared Glenn and wife Blair, Dustin Curtis and wife Sarah, Zachary Glenn and wife Sarah, Emily Curtis, Micalah Johnson, and Hunter Johnson; great-grandchildren: Ava Slate, Clinton Slate, Betsy Curtis, Wilson Curtis, Emily Thompson, Molly Thompson, C.J. Glenn, Easton Glenn, Runley Glenn, Lilah Curtis, and Lennon Hicks; and a host of family and friends who love Sue and will miss her always. Celebration of Life Visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 PM, Tuesday, August 1, 2017 at Smith-Benton Funeral Home, 322 N. Market St., Benton, Arkansas. Funeral service, officiated by Rev. Michael Reese, will be held at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, August 2 at Sharon Missionary Baptist Church, 402 Shenandoah Drive, Benton, Arkansas. Interment to follow at Smith-Rosemont Cemetery with her grandsons: Thad Curtis, Dustin Curtis, Jeremy Hicks, Kevin Slate, Jared Glenn, Zachary Glenn, and Hunter Johnson assisting as pallbearers.
