Doyne Luther Elder was born on March 30, 1934, and spent the first 18 years of his life in Jacksonville, Arkansas. After graduating from high school, magna cum laud, he briefly moved to Flint, Michigan, before coming back to Arkansas and settling in Little Rock as his permanent home. For approximately 20 years he managed the Heights Variety and Hardware in the Heights, which some will remember as a quaint, charming variety store with everything from toys to children’s clothing to pins and needles. When the store closed, Doyne moved to Kaufman lumber where he worked until his retirement. His retirement enabled him to do something he had always wanted to do – be in the classroom with students. He volunteered at Bale Elementary school for approximately 10 years, where he served as a classroom assistant 40 hours a week until his health would no longer permit him to walk up and down the halls, connecting with teachers and students as he went. There he happily tutored many children – helping them learn to read and understand basic math principles. Many of them will remember him always. Doyne was always deeply involved in church life, serving for many years as Deacon of Lakeshore Drive Baptist Church, which merged with the New Millennium Church in August 2018. At Lakeshore Drive Baptist Church he wrote and directed the much anticipated annual Valentine Banquets, as well as the music. He was Trustee Emeritus of New Millennium Church when the two churches merged. Throughout his adult life, Doyne taught Sunday school, and was a scholar of the New Testament. For many years, Doyne also managed, through the church, a food pantry that provides free food to homeless and financially strapped persons and families. For his combined volunteer work for his church and Bale Elementary School he was given a VIP Community School Volunteer Award in 2011 by the Little Rock School District (having been nominated by his church and school colleagues). Throughout his life he was an enthusiastic and thoroughly dedicated fan of the Arkansas Razorbacks, and rarely missed a Razorback football game played in Little Rock (and was always among the last very few persons to leave the stands, sleet or snow). Doyne was keenly interested in genealogy, tracing his ancestors back to at least one stowaway from Ireland in the 1600s. Doyne passed away peacefully on January 21, 2020 from complications due to type-1 diabetes, which he had battled valiantly for 60 years.Left to cherish his memory are his daughters: Sandy Burks and husband John of Benton, Arkansas and Linda Elder-Paul of Santa Barbara, California; grandchildren: Jason Burks and wife Rebecca, Stephen Burks and wife Lisa, Rush Cosgrove, Anna Cosgrove, Elizabeth Brown and husband Josh, Laurie McLeod and husband Raymond, Hannah Burks, Jacob “J.J.” Burks, Tyler Massey and wife Victoria, Kalie Scarbrough, Chase Prickett, and Alexus Prickett; great-grandchildren: Brooklyn Burks, Bennett Burks, Blake Brown, Taylor Brown, and Remy McLeod; and many more family members and friends who love Doyne and will miss him always. Virginia Pauline Staley, 91, of Bryant, went to be with the Lord on January 23, 2020. She was born June 4, 1928 in Little Rock to James Clinton and Pearl Ives Trent. She spent the last few months of her life under the loving care of Kindred Hospice and Pleasant Hill Care Home. Virginia spent her entire lifetime dedicating herself to her husband, her family, and her Savior. She co-founded Staley Electric Company in 1951 with Royce Edward Staley Sr. She served as the company’s secretary, treasurer, and matriarch from 1951-1977. She was a long-time member of Geyer Springs First Baptist Church and a member of the Early Adult 5 Women’s Sunday School. Virginia loved to spend her days tending to her home and her family, especially when her family was in her home (and to her, friends were family, too). She was never too busy to spend time with others and was always up for a last-minute lunch, shopping trip, drive to see someone she loved, or errand to help out someone else. You could often find her in the kitchen rearranging cabinets or doing dishes while talking on the phone with a neighbor, friend, or one of her kids or grandkids. She was an exceptional cook and an impeccable hostess, frequently skipping the meal so she could serve more — doting on her guests and making sure their glasses were full and their plate running over. She was often late, but it was because she squeezed as much life into her day as she could. Yet every day began with studying her Bible and praying for her loved ones at the kitchen counter, honing her servant leadership. She never met a stranger, never left anything unsaid, and if it was possible, never left any need unmet. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Raymond C. Trent, Marvin W. Trent, James R. Trent; sister Monnie Lee Trent, husband of 68 years Royce E. Staley Sr; and her son and daughter-in-law, William C. and Debbi Staley. She is survived by children Ed and Connie Staley of Little Rock and Anita and Rodger Woodall of Bryant; grandchildren Brent and Natalie Staley of Little Rock, Angie and Jordan Johnson of Little Rock; Jenna and John-David Haire of Bryant; Becca and Chuck Owens of Maumelle; and eleven great-grandchildren. The family would like to thank the staff of Kindred Hospice, Pleasant Hill Care Home, and Evergreen Living Center at Stagecoach for their excellent care since 2014. Funeral service will be Tuesday, January 28, 2020 at 2 p.m. with visitation prior at 1 p.m, at Geyer Springs First Baptist Church, 12400 I-30 in Little Rock. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that you support causes dear to Virginia’s heart: Geyer Springs FBC Music Ministry, 12400 I-30, Little Rock, AR 72210; SEARCH Ministries, PO Box 165029, Ft.
