Book: The Roommate Situation
Author: Katie Bailey
My Rating: 4 Rainbow Unicorn Stars
Man, I’ve been on a true crime binge lately (let’s be honest it’s all the time) but my sister convinced me to take a break from the murder and mayhem to read a romcom this week. It was such a stark contrast to what I’ve been reading and the perfect light read for this week full of back to school frenzy.
I’m not sure how she did it, but Katie Bailey packed so many pop culture references into this book so naturally that it was impressive. I mean from F•R•I•E•N•D•S to The Bachelor she covers it all. I loved it. Too many pop culture references can easily turn annoying, but this was the perfect balance. I also could not get enough of both main characters’ internal dialogue. Jess wondering what her friends would write in her obituary is possibly the most relatable thing I’ve ever read in a contemporary romcom. (I may or may not have had conversations with my friends about what pictures are approved or not for my memorial one day – God rest my soul.)
This book also has one of my favorite meet cutes. It is so funny I laughed out loud reading it. And it only sets the tone for the rest of the story, because it’s just one of many LOL moments. It’s also got a lot of the romance tropes that I love. “Falling for my best friend’s little sister” check. “Falling for my roommate” check. “Friends to lovers” check. And it’s like, squeaky clean y’all. Do you know how rare it is to find a contemporary romance that’s good, funny, AND clean? Super rare. Like rainbow unicorn rare. Which is why I’m anxiously awaiting the next book to publish.
My husband was a trooper and listened to me gush about this book (shoutout to all the good husbands out there) and at one point I said, “Look, if this was a Matthew McConaughey movie you would be so into it!” And honestly, that’s the most accurate comparison I can make for you – think The Wedding Planner or Failure To Launch. If you like hilarious romcoms and are looking for something lighthearted and clean, try this one!
