Sardis Shoe Tree to Come Down June 14th; Committee Formed to Plan Comemmoration
UPDATE, JUNE 2, 2017:
About 25 local residents were present for a meeting about the Sardis Shoe Tree, held the evening of June 1st, 2017, by County Judge Jeff Arey. The summary of the meeting provided by active Sardis resident John Cohen in a nutshell was: The tree is dead due to many contributing factors. A committee was formed with the judge, carvers, forestry, etc. next week with the goal of commemorating the tree – perhaps a carving from the wood.

The Saline County Judge’s Office invites the public to a meeting at the Sardis Community Center at 11401 Community Lane in Bauxite, on Thursday, June 1, 2017 at 6:30 p.m. to discuss the removal of the tree known as the “Shoe Tree.” More info below.
The tree is located at the intersections of North Sardis Road and Hogue Road. Because of numerous concerns about the tree, Saline County Judge Jeff Arey sought the advice of the local Cooperative Extension Office and the Arkansas Forestry Commission to determine the condition of the tree.
The Extension Office and Forestry Commission are of the opinion that the tree is dead, poses a hazard to the residents, and needs to be removed.
County Judge Jeff Arey will be in attendance at the meeting Thursday, and will discuss the timeline for the removal of the tree and the shoes. Arborists will also be in attendance and will be available to answer questions about the tree.
