For years, the Arkansas Paws in Prison program has partnered with animal shelters and rescue groups around the state, helping inmates and rescue dogs all at once. Inmates teach the dogs basic obedience skills and socialization through this program. This makes the dogs more adoptable. Paws in Prison .
Since the program began on December 8, 2011, Paws in Prison has expanded to seven facilities throughout the state, and more than 2,000 shelter dogs have been trained and adopted out to the public.
Paws in Prison reduces the number of dogs euthanized each year training them to be loving, obedient, adoptable pets. In addition, inmate trainers are able to acquire skills that support rehabilitation and reentry into society. The Department of Corrections states that there has been a positive impact on daily interactions between inmates and employees since the program began, improving security inside the prison.
Dogs that graduate from the Arkansas Paws in Prison training program are available for adoption. The partner organizations handle all adoptions.
