Mamie Landers Chisholm, 99, of Benton, went to be with the Lord on Monday, July 22, 2019. Mamie was born October 23, 1919, in Benton to Virgil and Josie Landers. Mamie ran a grocery store on River Street known as “Mamie’s” for around 60 years. Many students visited Mamie’s for cokes and candy before and after school.
Mamie was preceded in death by her husband, T. W. “Chiz” Chisholm; her parents, Virgil and Josie; brothers, Ralph, Ruff, Watt, Lacy and Bob; and sisters, Vera and Lucy.
Mamie is survived by a brother, Jim Landers (Deegy); sister-in-law Lea Landers; nephews, John Landers, Nick Landers, Steve Landers, Lance Landers, Jim Crawford, Dave Crawford and Jeff Lorenzo; and nieces, JoNell Mallory, Lisa McGuire, Sharon Landon, Denise McNeill and Melissa Goins; and numerous great nieces and nephews.
Mamie had no children of her own. However, she played “mother” to thousands of school children, while also helping to raise brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews and even friends.
Mamie passed away peacefully Monday morning. She was determined and looking forward to October when she would turn “100.”
Visitation will be Wednesday, July 24, from 6:00-7:30 at Ashby’s Funeral Home. A graveside service will be Thursday, July 25, at 10:00 at Old Rosemont Cemetery.
Her family would like to thank the staff at Alcoa Pines for the care they gave her.
