My Favorite Historical Fiction Reads!
1. The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Michele Richardson
This book was so emotional. Definitely not what I would consider “light reading” but I loved it so much. With such strong and vivid characters, I knew it was going to resonate with me. Not to mention, from a historical standpoint, it tells the stories of several people you probably never heard about in your history classes. Like the pack mule librarians born of the WPA during The Great Depression. Or the Blue Fugates of Kentucky, who actually had a rare condition that caused their skin to have a blue hue. It’s very interesting and well written!
2. What The Wind Knows by Amy Harmon
A time travel historical fiction with characters that feel so real. For a story that includes time travel to feel so authentic is a testament to Harmon’s talent. And any historical fiction set in Ireland or Scotland is always a hit for me. I also think her writing style was simultaneously lyrical and historical. Just fun to read, and it sticks with you for days after you’ve finished.
3. Beneath a Scarlet Sky by Mark Sullivan
I love any book that takes place during the WWII era. And this one is based on a true story, which I always find fascinating. An innocent teenager turns spy during the war and it is a gripping read set against the backdrop of war torn Italy. Parts of it read like a thriller because of the suspense and adventure, yet other parts are poignant and emotional. Sullivan brings that era to life with the precision of a wartime journalist, and made me fall in love with the main character, Pino Lella. I also saw that this is being adapted for film and it will make a great movie!
