Book: How to Get Over Your Ex in 90 Days
Author: Jennifer Peel
My Rating: 3 Southern Stars
How about a contemporary romance this week, readers? I generally stick to mystery, historical fiction, and fantasy but occasionally I dip my toes into the contemporary romance genre. This one is clean, cute, funny, and southern. All good things in my humble, but correct, opinion!
Presley is a drama teacher at a local high school. She’s in a picture perfect relationship with Jackson, one of the football coaches. And she loves her life in small town Alabama. But when her boyfriend gets a promotion and subsequently breaks up with her, she has to figure out how to keep her job while not losing her mind working with her Ex. Who, obviously is going to come to his senses and want her back, right? But obviously she can’t take him back, right? RIGHT? So she starts a 90 day plan to get over him and survive the school year.
This story had all the small town southern charm, y’all! From Jackson’s ornery, but well meaning grandma, to a small school where gossip travels faster than warp speed – especially when it’s about the teachers! It’s also told in a unique way through Presley’s journal. It took some getting used to, but once I got the hang of it I didn’t mind. I did have some issues with certain parts of the plot. For instance, when Jackson suddenly (very suddenly y’all) decides nothing and no one will stop him from winning back his girl. Also, Jackson’s BIG SECRET was pretty easy to guess, and should never have been a secret from his own girlfriend. These points were annoying to me, but contemporary romance isn’t known for its flawless plots and revolutionary story telling y’all. I was really just looking for something quick that would put a smile on my face, and wouldn’t make me blush if my mom knew I was reading it.
If you’re looking for a literary masterpiece, this is not the pick for you. But if you need a distraction for a few hours, and you like clean rom-coms then I recommend this one!
