A local “little” team is headed to play a big game. The Benton Little League Major All-Star team plays Tuesday night, July 18th at 6:00 p.m. for the State Championship in White Hall. The opponent will be determined Monday night. They will either play Junior Deputy (West Little Rock) or White Hall. Come to the game at 101 Parkway Drive, White Hall, Ar 71602.
The Benton team is all 11 and 12 year olds who reside in Saline County. If win state, they will have to do some fundraising to do. The next game would be in Waco, Texas for the Little League Southwest Regional Tournament. There they would face off against the other state champion teams from Colorado, Lousiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. All of those games will be televised on ESPN. It’s been over 20 years since a Benton team has made it to the Southwest Regional Tournament.
If they were to win the Southwest Regional Tournament, they would go to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, PA. Only three teams from Arkansas have ever done that. The last team to do so was in 1979.
Team members are #1 Easton Phifer, #2 Parker Street, #3 Witt Brothers, #4 Manny Payne, #5 Nate Wagnon, #6 Gray Goodner, #7 Rex Roseberry, #8 Brodie Miller, #9 Massey Wake, #10 Cooper Andrews, #11 Bryson Greer, and#12 Austin Jenks. The coaching team includes Manager Scott Richey, Coach Boyd Goodner, and Coach Reid Phifer.
