Book: So That Happened
Author: Katie Bailey
My Rating: 4 sweet stars
Hey bookworms! I finally read a book that was actually on my summer reading list! Go figure. It’s a romcom my sister recommended to me, and it’s Katie Bailey who writes some of the funniest characters. I went in with high expectations and loved every page!
So, I have had a super crazy few weeks where my options for reading time were either late at night, trying not to fall asleep; or waking up early to read a few chapters before I started my day. You read that correctly. I, the opposite of a morning person, was waking up early to read this book. It was just so dang cute, and it actually put me in a good mood because there were parts that had me laughing out loud. I don’t laugh in the morning y’all…Especially not before coffee, so that’s saying a lot.
Katie Bailey writes some of the greatest main characters and some of the most awkwardly funny scenes, and this book was no exception. Annie and Liam have an awkward meeting on an airplane that carries over into an airport hotel. Both of them think they’ll go their separate ways, never to see or hear from each other again…only to see each other again on Monday because SURPRISE she just started a new job and he’s her new boss! I loved Annie and I thought she was quirky and clever. I thought Liam was going to be your run of the mill hot grumpy business man character, but the further I got into the story the more he surprised me. I was particularly thrilled to see Liam baffled at his own feelings as they developed. It was so cute how clueless he was about himself.
This book even surprised me with some of the side characters, Liam’s niece, Allegra (AKA “Legs”) was a total scene stealer. I instantly loved her. And Katie nailed the small details in this story! Like referencing Twilight, Gilmore Girls, Miss Congeniality, and boy bands the nostalgia and pop culture references throughout the story were top notch. All of this on top of it being a fairly clean romcom, makes it one of my favorite reads this summer.
I’m only taking off one star because I thought it was so sweet, it was edging into “sickeningly sweet” territory for me. However, that’s the point of these types of books and I was kind of in the mood for it. I highly recommend it if you’re looking for something to make you smile.
