Book: The Recovery Agent
Author: Janet Evanovich
My Rating: 5 Adventurous Stars
I found the perfect summer read, y’all! For some reason, I currently only have two modes. I’m either crafting or cleaning. So I was looking for an audiobook since I can’t read and do either of those tasks at the same time. I found this new one from Janet Evanovich, and since I love the Stephanie Plum series I thought I would like this one as well. And (as usual) I was right.
This book was so much fun, especially as an audiobook! It reminded me of classic adventure romcoms like Fool’s Gold or even a teensy bit of Romancing the Stone. Gabriella is a “recovery agent” usually doing work for insurance companies or wealthy people looking to retrieve valuable items. The job is like investigation mixed with stealth ops and Gabriella is good at her job. When her quirky grandmama sends her on a treasure hunt to save their small town, Gabriella has to go a bit outside of her normal job description. Of course, circumstances require her to work with her ex husband who is super hot and totally still into her. And they end up following the clues into all sorts of exotic locations and all sorts of trouble.
Gabriella and Rafer (the hot ex husband) have some great dialogue. Like, if a screenwriter wanted to make this into a movie, there would not be much adaptation needed for those two characters. They are *chef’s kiss* flawless. There’s also the quirky grandmama who talks to a ghost, a wiry guide who is probably also part of a drug cartel, a classic villain who is of course after the same treasure. It’s all exactly what you’re looking for in an adventure story! I loved every second of it. Not to mention the audiobook is less than 8 hours if you listen at normal speed. (I typically listen at 1.3x so it was even shorter for me.)
I highly recommend this if you’re in the mood for something fun and exciting, you need a good book for your summer road trip this year, or if you liked the movie Fool’s Gold you will probably love this book. If you’re thinking of listening to this in mixed company, I would rate this PG-13 because there are some sparks between the main characters, but nothing too crazy and not much language either.
