Book: The Night Circus
- Author: Erin Morgenstern
- My Rating: 3 out of 5 Magical Stars
A mysterious circus exists, arriving with no preamble, black and white tents, and wonders that never cease. Two magicians and their chosen apprentices are locked in competition, but more hangs in the balance than they know. And of course, our two apprentices fall in love! With that said, I will warn you – this “competition” spans over a decade, and it’s not magicians dueling with wands, it’s much more slow and subtle. Also, the apprentices do fall in love, however this is not a sweep-you-off-your-feet-romance-novel. Their love for each other is part of the story, but really the main character here is the circus as a whole.
This is not a typical book that I would choose. But I was driving 9 hours from New Orleans and listened to the audiobook. I must say, Jim Dale MADE this book for me. During parts that were slow, I was at least still enjoying his voice. I think because I was a captive audience stuck in my car listening for 9 hours, I didn’t give up on the book like I probably would have had I been reading it to myself. And I’m so glad! By the end of the book I was really taken by the story and the characters. I was impressed with the imagination that went into this story. I wasn’t able to predict much of the book, which was nice for a change.
The tone made me feel like if Baz Luhrman (director of Moulin Rouge and Australia) were to write novels instead of direct movies. It was so stylized. Steeped in mysterious, vintage, carnival vibes. The writing, accompanied by Jim Dale’s voice, really created a picture in my mind and I could see the story playing out in my head. I don’t recommend it to just anyone, but I surprised myself with how much I liked the book in the end. So here’s my recommendation, if you ever feel like running off to join a magical circus, get this book (especially the audiobook) and enjoy the adventure!
P.S. According to IMDB.com, The Night Circus is listed as “In Development.” So we may get to watch it on the big screen one day!
