Book Series: Kingfountain
- Author: Jeff Wheeler
- My Rating: 4 out 5 crowns
Ok fellow bookworms, this review is a little bit different. I’m going to tell you about an entire series, that you should definitely read no matter how old you are. The Kingfountain series is one of my absolute favorites! When I recommend it to people I always describe it as Game of Thrones, but rated PG. It’s a six book fantasy series with knights and castles and magic and epic battles. The characters are incredibly well written, and readers will experience a wide range of emotions throughout the series.
Here’s what you need to know. The series begins with The Queen’s Poisoner. It follows two main characters, Owen and Elysabeth, as children. Seeing this world of magic and court politics through the eyes of eight year olds was unique for me, I thought it was going to annoy me, but I ended up loving it. Throughout the series you see Owen and Elysabeth grow up and have children. By the third book, their children become the main focus. This is part of what gives off major Game of Thrones vibes. So many well developed characters, the families become characters of their own in a way, and the series covers a span of many years. Because the story covered so much of the characters lives, I really felt protective of my favorites, you can ask my sister. I basically spent an entire day telling her the whole series in painstaking detail because I needed someone to feel my pain!
Each book is full of surprise revelations. And I wouldn’t recommend getting super attached to every character you meet, because they don’t all make it out alive. If you’ve watched Game of Thrones and you’re thinking, “That ending was terrible, I’m not going through that again.” Don’t worry, Jeff Wheeler knows how to wrap up a story involving multiple kingdoms, generations, and beloved characters. I finished the series a year ago, and I could sit down with you and still tell you the entire story because it sucked me in so deep! I recommend this book if you love epic fantasy stories. Fans of Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, or Throne of Glass will probably enjoy this series.
DISCLAIMER: There are also three prequel stories. But I read this series first, and then these prequels. It did not hinder my reading experience at all. However, if you are picky about reading things in exact chronological order, start with The Poisoner’s Enemy.
