Book: Heirs of Grace
- Author: Tim Pratt
- My Rating: 4 out of 5 Haunted Mansions
My sister read this book first, and one morning at Starbucks she said, “Krystle, you have to read this book. It has the BEST first line ever.” She wasn’t wrong. Do you want to know the epic first line?
“My new life was off to a bumpy start even before Trey got eaten by the mirror.”
If you know a better first line, I’d love to hear it. Aren’t you intrigued already? Don’t you want to know who Trey is? And where did this mirror that eats people come from? And what new, bumpy life happened before the people eating mirror? It’s GENIUS.
Rebekah Lull mysteriously inherits the fortune and mansion of a long-lost relative, and the roller coaster ride begins. To describe the mansion as “haunted” feels wrong, it’s more like enchanted – think Beauty and the Beast castle. There are magical siblings that Rebekah never knew about coming after her inheritance. There’s the charming and helpful Trey by her side. There is absolutely no way you are going to guess what’s happening in this story, and I’m not going to spoil it for you!
Two reasons this has a four instead of a five. ONE: there is some confusing time travel stuff. And time travel annoys me because everyone makes up their own rules and all of them are hard to understand. TWO: It’s not part of a series, and I wanted more at the end of this book. While this wasn’t a literary masterpiece, it was wickedly entertaining to read. This is a good one to read in October with the magic, enchanted mansion, family curses. It’s not too spooky, but it is certainly fun to read.
