I love audiobooks. So much. And I think there’s something akin to nostalgia when you listen to an audiobook. Like people who gathered around the radio to listen to stories not so long ago. And Christmas yields so many great stories PERFECT for audiobook format. So whether you listen on a road trip to Grandmother’s house, or while making gingerbread cookies, or just in your earbuds in a rare moment of solitude…here are some audiobooks you can enjoy this Christmas.
A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens
There are many versions of this available, one of my absolute favorites is narrated by Tim Curry. But the story is the definition of classic, and any version you find is going to put you in the Christmas Spirit.
Peter Rabbit: Christmas is Coming by Beatrix Potter
This one can be read as an advent, one chapter each night until Christmas, however you can also just listen to as many chapters as you want. And who doesn’t love Peter Rabbit?! An added bonus is the narrator is British, which I always love.
How the Grinch Stole Christmas by Dr. Seuss
Ok, this one is definitely gonna be a bigger hit with young children, and it’s only 12 minutes long. But I dare you not to be transported back to childhood as you listen! The background music and Walter Matthau’s voice are pure nostalgia and Christmas magic.
Letters From Father Christmas by J.R.R. Tolkien
If I could choose an author to compose letters from Santa, it would be Tolkien. It’s perfection. The audiobook is wonderful with original music and three different narrators. And the tales of the North Pole from Father Christmas himself are just a delight. It definitely gives off cozy, sitting by the fire, drinking hot chocolate vibes.
Jesus Calling: The Story of Christmas by Sarah Young and Katya Longhi
And if you want to focus on the original Christmas story, this one is only 18 minutes long. It beautifully explains the birth of Jesus and its context in the whole story of creation and redemption. It’s made to share with children, but honestly it’s a great reminder for people of all ages.
And here’s a bonus recommendation for y’all!
‘Twas the Night Before Christmas read by Keith Morrison
You can find the video on YouTube, or the audio is on Spotify and Amazon Music. It’s less than 4 minutes long, but it is THE BEST. People who know me, are aware of my obsession with Keith. I have a Keith Morrison sweater, a pillow with his face on it, and a playlist of all his episodes of dateline that I listen to all the time. So, when he read this classic Christmas story last year, I was instantly obsessed. It’s fun, and if you’re a Dateline fan, I highly recommend you find it!
