Hey bookworms? How do y’all feel about short stories? I don’t typically read them, other than a copy of Edgar Allen Poe short stories and poems that my brother gave me a long time ago. But I discovered that Kindle puts out short story collections by well known authors, and I decided to try it out this week.
This series is called “Hush” and each story features a plot line built around separating truth from lies. An influencer who isn’t quite being authentic. A radical father raising his family in isolation. A marriage on the rocks. A journalist looking for a big story. A missing child and a psychic. A novelist obsessed with his ex. They’re all written by crime authors and they all pack a big punch in just a few pages.
The thing about short stories is that I love them and I also don’t. I really appreciate that due to the nature of a short story, they typically get straight to the point. There are no overly descriptive passages to slog through. No rabbit trails that add zero value to the story. Short stories are efficient and great for instant gratification. However, the thing I don’t like about them is that there could always be more. I read all of these short stories and really wished I could get “the whole story.” What I got was the most action packed point of the whole thing, but I was missing what led up to the action, or what happens in the aftermath.
I enjoyed the series. Each story was interesting and entertaining. And I loved how different they all were! Political thrillers, psychological thrillers, mysteries, etc. I was able to read most of them in under an hour. So, if you are waiting in the car rider line to pick up your kid from school, or sitting in a waiting room at the doctor’s office, or waiting in a really long drive through line or something…check out these short stories on Kindle!
