Am I in a book club? No.
Have I considered hosting a book club? Yes.
Have I put forth even the slightest effort to make it happen? No.
HOWEVER, I often finish a book and think, “This would make a great book club discussion.”
So, here’s a list of some books that I think you could talk about endlessly in a book club (or just in a text to your bff if you’re like me and won’t join one or start one).
The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Michelle Richardson
I know this one isn’t a new release, and there is also a second book I haven’t read yet. But this book is so beautiful and so sad. Like, I cried actual tears reading this. Set in depression era Kentucky, a woman with a rare condition that makes her skin blue becomes a pack horse librarian. She takes books to people who live in rural areas. We follow her journey as well as glimpses of her patrons lives. And it is SO GOOD (also depressing…but mostly good). Can you just imagine the book club discussions? Everyone bring your own tissues and comfort snacks.
The Seven and a Half Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton
Again, this isn’t a brand new release. But it is such a captivating whodunnit! If you and a group of friends all read it together and tried to solve it (good luck to you) it would be THE MOST FUN. It’s like Freaky Friday meets Groundhog Day but with Agatha Christie vibes. For this book club you’re each going to need a bulletin board and some red string so you can explain all your theories like professionals.
The Princess Diarist by Carrie Fisher
A nonfic pick, because I’m evolving as a reader. It’s the last book she wrote, and I am so looking forward to reading it! Her other books are so funny and self deprecating but then surprisingly insightful. I loved Wishful Drinking so much and found it challenging to put my thoughts into words when I finished. I can only assume this one will be the same. Plus she finally writes in depth about her experience filming Star Wars. Put your hair up in space buns before this book club meeting.
A Girl Called Samson by Amy Harmon
Amy Harmon, a queen of historical fiction, has written a book based in Revolutionary War Colonial America. Deborah Samson disguises herself as a soldier to join the Continental Army. It’s based on a real historical figure, and I just know it is going to be a masterpiece. Just imagine blending a great fictional story with real life historic events and people. SO MUCH TO DISCUSS! Plus, just the general logistics of convincingly portraying a man while at war. I’m playing “I’ll Make a Man Out of You” from Mulan to start this meeting.
So there you have it, four books I think would make great book clubs! Holler at me if you want to buddy read with me, or actually start a book club. I’m your girl!
