Book: The Riven Kingdoms
Author: Shari L. Tapscott
My Rating: 4 Stars
Well, I stumbled onto yet another YA fantasy series and became instantly obsessed y’all. The Riven Kingdoms begins with Forest of Firelight and hooked me for four books. Honestly, I wish there were more!
Ok, have you seen the movie Tangled? If you can picture Rapunzel and Flynn’s dynamic in a fantasy world with haunted orchards and terrifying creatures that come out at night…then you have a good basis for how this book feels. I immediately could see that Rhys was this bad boy with a heart of gold, and Amalia was the purest of hearts, but also super sheltered and naive. Rhys needs to use her to his advantage, but also he thinks she’s adorable and he wants to protect her. Cue the heart eyes!
I thought I would get a little bored with the love story, considering the series is four books long. I was wrong. I did not get bored at all. Not to mention, there are new characters introduced in each book. Like Amalia’s brother, Braeton and Rhys’ sister, Cassia. Each book is action packed because Amalia is a walking disaster magnet. The characters were amazing, and I thought it was unique in that there wasn’t necessarily a villain to hate. It was more just the impending doom that the characters were battling against. Also, I wouldn’t mind continuing this series so that we can find out how all of Rhys’ knights are doing, because they were like a big, adorable family of misfits and I loved all of them.
My only complaint is that I thought the ending was a little too perfect. That sounds like it’s not even a real complaint, but I’m just saying everything worked out a little too nicely for my personal tastes. I like a little tragedy every now and then. Anyway, I highly recommend the whole series! It’s a clean, quick, exciting, romantic read.
