Book: Dolly Parton, Songteller: My Life in Lyrics
Author: Dolly Parton
My Rating: 5 stars
Y’all, I love Dolly Parton. Who doesn’t, really? The woman is a national treasure. I’m reviewing the audiobook version of this, because I listened to it on Audible, but I’m sure the physical book is just as good. As an audiobook, this feels more like an oral history of Dolly’s entire catalog of music. And it’s very conversational. She’s not reading to you, she’s talking to you.
I loved the chapters when she spoke about her family and her faith and her early life in rural Tennessee. There were several moments where I said out loud, “How is she famous? We don’t deserve her.” She continually forces people to look past her appearance to acknowledge her talents as a songwriter, singer, and overall entertainer. And don’t even get me started on the chapter when she describes the beginning of her “Imagination Library.” When she told the story of how smart her father was, despite the fact that he never learned to read. Then how she invited her dad to help her with a program that will send free books to children. I was teary eyed, y’all. She said she thought her dad might be more proud of the Imagination Library than her music career. It was just so heartfelt, and it made me want to call my dad. (Who am I kidding, I talk to my dad everyday…I totally called him.)
To be honest, after listening to this as an audiobook, I’m not sure I would even fully appreciate the physical book now. After hearing Dolly’s syrupy sweet southern accent tell me the stories behind “I Will Always Love You” and “Jolene” I don’t know if just reading the words would do it justice now. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves music, but especially to Dolly Parton fans. The audiobook would be great listening for a short road trip at just under 6 hours.
