Book: The Enemy and Miss Innes
Author: Martha Keyes
My Rating: 3.5 Sassy Stars
Hello dear readers! Back in April I reviewed The Widow and the Highlander, well today I’m reviewing its sequel. I was highly anticipating The Enemy and Miss Innes because this one stars two of my favorite kinds of characters – a feisty female lead, and a broody hero with a tragic backstory. And it totally hit the mark. I read it in a day because I couldn’t put it down.
This one picks up basically right where the first left off. But now we have Elizabeth’s perspective, and she is not the delicate flower type that her sister Christina was. THE SASS IS STRONG WITH THIS ONE, Y’ALL. And who does she find herself working with other than one her worst enemies… It’s the Montague’s and the Capulet’s all over again! Malcolm is a trusted member of the MacKinnon clan, so by default Elizabeth finds him VERY suspish. As she should, Malcolm’s been sent to gain her trust and then betray her, but the more he gets to know her, the harder his task becomes.
First of all, I love a good enemies to lovers trope. They always have the best banter, and watching them realize with reluctance that they’re falling for each other is just so satisfying. So, I was into this from the start! Also, Martha surprised me with a bonus adorable pet – a dog named Fergus (who has a limp, but it’s not sad it’s totally endearing). GAH! I was not prepared to be emotionally attached. Once again, Martha managed to pack a lot of action into this one so it was a page turner. Ultimately, I gave it a slightly lower rating than the first simply because I thought the main conflict could have been solved with one honest conversation. That’s one of my bookish pet peeves. And especially when the first book’s conflict was so complicated I just expected the same from this one.
If you read The Widow and the Highlander, pick this one up soon! I would recommend reading these in order though, otherwise Elizabeth’s hatred of the MacKinnons won’t make much sense to you.
