Book: The Inheritance Games
Author: Jennifer Lynn Barnes
My Rating: 4 Puzzling Stars
How about a mystery to start off October? I found Inheritance Games because people on the internet kept comparing it to the movie “Knives Out” and I can totally understand why. So many pieces to this puzzle, and twists and turns on every page! I loved it.
Avery Grambs is a broke high school kid who lives with her half sister and dreams of getting a scholarship and moving on to bigger and better things. When a Texas billionaire – a man Avery didn’t even know – leaves her his entire fortune after his death, she finds herself in completely foreign territory. Living in Hawthorne House full of secret passages and riddles is a head trip for Avery, and that’s not to mention the disinherited family that’s also living there.
This did have big Knives Out vibes, all the people on the internet didn’t lie about that. But it also gave me big “Clue” similarities with the setting in an elaborate house, with so many unique characters that all give you reasons to be suspicious of them. I really trusted no one throughout the book. And the mystery! Can you see me doing the chef’s kiss? Because it was perfection. Like, up there with Agatha Christie. It’s one of those books that’s best if you DON’T try to find the answer yourself. Just read it and let it all unfold around you. Much more enjoyable that way, and you won’t solve the mystery anyway. Trust me.
My biggest complaint is that I thought this was a standalone…and then I got to the end and realized it’s not. And I’m going to need that next book STAT. The ending left me with a lot of questions that I would like answered yesterday! This is a great read for fall/Halloween season, and the writing is wonderful. It really plays out like a movie in your head. So, if you’re looking for a good mystery give this one a shot!
