We found out in September that the old building in downtown Benton that used to hold Harvest Foods – and was empty for about 6 years – had been sold to a tech company (See related articles below). It wasn’t news that fit the rumors.
Some people said it might be a bowling alley, since we just lost one. Others thought it would be a big liquor store in the middle of town, ignoring that none of the 21 licenses issued for Saline County liquor stores had been issued for that address… and nevermind that a church too close nearby for that. Some said it might be a night club or a restaurant or a flea market, and the list goes on.
Well maybe a tech company isn’t so glamorous for your average citizen, but it means new construction since they are demolishing the old structure and rebuilding, jobs in Benton and more activity in the downtown area. That’s a win all the way around.
Now about a month after the news, it’s getting real. It’s not just a “Sold” sticker on the real estate sign. It’s heavy machinery ripping apart the bits of building and stacking it all in a pile. Thanks to Stacy Todd Skaggs for this video. He took it Tuesday, October 27, 2015.
