Book: Caraval
Author: Stephanie Garber
My Rating: 4 out of 5 Roses
I fell in love with this book instantly! I started reading the kindle version of Caraval, but then went on a 9 hour road trip alone, and ended up also getting the audio book. I was absolutely captivated! The fantastical world that Stephanie created at Caraval was like Harry Potter mixed with Alice in Wonderland.
Scarlett has found herself engaged in an arranged marriage when tickets arrive for the mysterious and magical Caraval. It’s a game where the audience gets to participate and anything can happen. She and her sister Tella run away to Caraval with a broody sailor named Julian. Scarlett intends to only be an observer of the game. But when her sister is kidnapped by the game’s master, the lines between performance and reality begin to blur, and Scarlett is forced to play along.
Listen y’all, this book is so good. On top of the interesting story, you’re constantly trying to figure out what’s real and what’s not. The characters are all vibrant and unique. Also, I would give my life savings to have Scarlett’s magical dress! It was like a character in itself.
There were some moments where I found Scarlett annoying. I found Tella much more interesting as a character. Overall, even though I didn’t relate to Scarlett all the time, I loved all the characters, even the minor ones. And if you read this and feel similarly to me, the next book, Legendary, is primarily focused on Tella. So yay! I highly recommend this book and the entire trilogy if you like fantasy, mystery, and the young adult genre.
