Several entities in Saline County had more than $63,300 in unclaimed property owed to them through the Great Arkansas Treasure Hunt program, according to the Arkansas State Auditor’s Office.
Auditor Dennis Milligan met with Bryant Mayor Allen Scott on Tuesday regarding more than $33,000 the city has in unclaimed funds. He later visited the Humane Society of Saline County and helped the organization locate more than $7,500. Last week, the auditor’s office delivered a check worth more than $22,000 to Civitan Services in Benton.
“Unclaimed property can be any number of items, such as unpaid life insurance benefits, forgotten bank accounts, certificates of deposit, contents of safe deposit boxes – you name it,” Milligan said. “Since I took office on January 10th, we’ve returned more than $7 million to citizens through the Great Arkansas Treasure Hunt.”
Unclaimed property occurs when owners abandon an account – through a move or a death, perhaps – and the company or financial institution cannot locate the owner. The money or properties are then submitted to the Auditor of State’s office, which works to connect properties to their rightful owners. The Auditor’s office is required by law to return unclaimed property back to citizens.
