Officials from the Benton Police Department stated that they are gathering witness statements from a physical altercation at the Saline County Republican Committee meeting on Thursday night, September 5, 2024.
No charges were filed at the time, according to the Police, and won’t be – unless they see something during the review of the video footage. The meeting dismantled peacefully. The committee meeting was held at the Senior Activity Center at the River Center in Benton.
All the details we have right now is the video, and a few words from someone at the scene. The video appears to show Jimmie Cavin of Faulkner County punching Jon Newcomb of Saline County. This came immediately after two women had tense words. We originally reported erroneously that Mr. Cavin is a co-host on The Dave Elswick Show, however a representative of Salem Media / 101.1FM The Answer confirmed that Cavin is not employed there but is an occasional guest on the show. They further stated that they requested that Mr. Cavin not be on the Dave Elswick Show for a while. We apologize for that reporting error.
One witness, Kenneth Wallis stated that Mr. Cavin hit Mr. Newcomb and that was “followed by a wrestling match on the floor.” He also said “Jon is okay.” Another witness said that the police were there.
