A Benton man was killed and his wife was injured in a wreck in Little Rock over the weekend, according to Arkansas State Police (ASP).
In a release, ASP stated that two or more motorists were racing on Interstate 430 northbound on Saturday afternoon. They say this caused a fatality accident near the intersection at Colonel Glenn that disrupted traffic for more than an hour.
A 2012 Dodge Charger driven by Darmel Dashun Batemon Jr., 20, struck the Allens 2015 Toyota Avalon from the rear, forcing the vehicle off the roadway, where it struck a tree. Batemon was injured.
Gerald Stuart Allen, 84, of Benton was killed. His wife, Lucille Kiser Allen, was injured. The wreck was reported at 1:25 p.m. The death was the 146th Arkansas highways in 2023.
An investigation is ongoing. Arkansas State Police urges motorists to call 911 if they witness vehicles racing or operating in an unsafe manner.
