One officer working in Saline County has properly disposed of a record of over 51 tons of illegally dumped materials in 2017. Officer Shane Knight of Recycle Saline is licensed by the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) as an Illegal Dumps Control Officer (IDCO). There are 28 such officers around the state. The job of an IDCO is to create a visible effort of eliminating illegal dumping and litter on our roadways.
In 2017, Knight disposed of 102,581 pounds of illegal dumps. This almost doubles the 2016 amount of 54,565 pounds. These materials include household waste, tires, furniture, appliances, and household hazardous waste, along with solid waste hauler and litter control complaints. Recycle Saline began participating in this program in June of 2015.
Tiffany Dunn, Executive Director of Recycle Saline stated, “Unfortunately, illegal dumping and burning remain an issue in Saline County. Recycle Saline will continue its efforts in eliminating the problem moving into 2018.”
Officer Knight patrols all of Saline County, enforcing Title 8 (environmental) and state statutes that pertain to the solid waste act and the litter control act.
Recycle Saline’s IDCO program has quickly become the state’s leading IDCO program, within the 18 solid waste districts, and among the 27 other IDCO’S in the state. Officer Knight also teaches the certification and training courses for the IDCO, through the Arkansas Environmental Training Academy in Camden Arkansas.
