Before last week, I didn’t even know that Dairy Queen serves breakfast. The sign pictured above would suggest that they definitely do. Now listen, this article is a paid ad for Dairy Queen, but they asked me to come in and try the breakfast and talk about it, so that, friends, is exactly what I intend to do. My family and I wandered into our Dairy Queen of Saline County restaurant on Saturday morning and ordered one of nearly everything. This was the only fitting thing to do, since we’d never tried any of it.
We got our drinks and took a seat next to one of many televisions hung on the wall. The offerings included coffee, milk and orange juice, in addition to the normal array of sodas and such. It just makes sense that the restaurant had tuned the TVs to cartoons. Depending on your age, at one time in your life, Saturday morning might have been the only time in your week to be able to watch cartoons.
As we waited for our food, I checked in on social media to brag let my friends know about the new development of breakfast at DQ – and of me about to take part in it. The comments began to roll in. Some of my friends also didn’t know DQ served breakfast. It is just now beginning at this location, since they have settled in from their grand opening. The breakfast hours are Mondays-Saturdays 6:00 to 10:00 a.m. and on Sundays it’s 7:00 to 10:00 a.m.
Some friends told me that other locations of Dairy Queen have had breakfast for years. This information soothed me, because it made me think the kitchen knows what they’re doing by now. Still other comments were requests for me to bring some breakfast to their house. I ignored those requests.
Let’s talk about all the food we ordered. We actually didn’t get everything on the menu, but here is the list:
Yesss, pancakes. And yes, they were as big and fluffy and golden brown as they look in the video – maybe bigger. This pile could have been used to lift a few reps to build up your biceps, but we chose instead to cover them in butter and syrup and eat them. Depending on your physical abilities, this might be merely part of a delicious breakfast for you, but I’d be happy with just one of these pancakes as an entire meal. There are three in an order. We were off to a good start.
We also ordered what my dad said was his new favorite. The Ultimate Hash Browns Platter with Sausage. This is hash brown potatoes, scrambled eggs, sausage and onions. I’m pretty sure you can tell them to leave off the onions, but according to Dad, that made it all the better. I tried some and I felt the same way about it as I did about my biscuits and gravy. The sausage makes it. I have a theory that they are using proprietary pigs or something because the sausage was so good. But I love the option to order gravy to go with anything they have on the menu. We didn’t try the chicken biscuit for breakfast, and you can have gravy with that, and to me, what else could you want with that?
Mom ordered the Steak Fingers with Gravy, which turned out to be a forkless way to eat chicken fried steak. I mean that’s exactly what you’re getting, except it’s in strips so you can pick it up and dunk it in the gravy. If you’re wondering whether I think this is a good thing, consider that I like food, and that I think making easier access to food is always a good thing.
My 15-year-old ordered the Classic Breakfast Burrito with Bacon. This is bacon, egg and cheese in a warm flour tortilla. This was also a teen eating it, so I didn’t get a bite of it, but it did meet a hasty demise, so that should tell you something. At least I was able to get a picture before it disappeared.
We also we tried the Cinnamon Pull-A-Parts. This is like a cinnamon roll but it’s got sections like monkey bread would, so that you can pull off a piece of it and eat it like a civilized human. I’m not saying I ate it in a civilized manner, it’s just an option. I mean look at it. Mmmm… Anyway, we tore it up. It was delicious and I wanted ten more, but I had to be able to walk out of the building when we were done here.
Finally, my parents decided on a treat. I don’t even know how they had room, except that they must be experts at this point in their eating careers. Dad ordered a Butterfinger Blizzard and Mom ordered one of those new Orange Dreamsicle Dipped Cones that we’ve been seeing in TV commercials. Both looked wonderful and forbiddenly delicious since one wouldn’t normally have ice cream for breakfast. Ok, most wouldn’t. I mean I guess you would if it was handy. Anyway, the cool thing is, you can order your ice cream and pay for it but then receive it at the end of the meal. This is optimal, given that you don’t want it to be melted by the time you are done eating everything else.
I already told you at the beginning of this article that DQ contacted me and asked me to review their breakfast. But they didn’t tell me what to say. You can surmise already that I had a pleasant if nap-inducing dining experience. But I have to say that I’ve been to DQ in Saline County and Cabot several times since they’ve opened and I’ve always experienced a constant – customer service.
They give you a number after you order your food, but they never treat you like a number. From the the store manager to the folks taking your order to the ones coming around to clean the dining area, this is a friendly place to come with family and friends to grab an ice cream cake for a birthday, eat lunch or supper, or now you can have breakfast. Ohh and the gravy is all day, you guys. Yum.
