I know most of us aren’t ready to talk about taxes yet, but it is the end of the year and it’s coming… and so are the IRS scams. I want the public to be aware of the ways that people will attempt to get your money or install something on your computer without your permission or knowledge.
Let’s go through this email I received this morning. I get news in my email inbox all the time, so I had to stop and think of whether I signed up for notifications from the IRS about anything. Look in the screenshot of the email below.
- It says right there in the top that it’s from an email that’s registered to the IRS but… They just set that email address as their name, hoping someone wouldn’t see their real email address is something completely different.
- Also look through the email for typos and grammar errors.
- And above all else, remember that the IRS doesn’t send emails to individuals about their taxes.
