Book: Silver Dollar Duke
Author: Sally Britton
My Rating: 3 Stars
Hey bookworms! Have you ever read a genre crossover? Some go together like sci-fi/thriller, and then some make you quirk an eyebrow like Victorian/western. I’ll be honest, I’m a fan of genre benders whether I think they’re a good match or not. So, I’m always willing to give it a try. Silver Dollar Duke was a risk that definitely paid off.
Toss an English gentleman onto a ranch in the middle of Arizona in the 1890s and it is as entertaining as you imagine it could be. Evan, AKA Duke, is equal parts naive about life in the Wild West and capable of working hard to live out his boyhood dreams of being a cowboy. Of course, in his dreams he didn’t fall for the rancher’s daughter and have to choose between love and responsibilities.
WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO DUKE AND DANNIE??? You can guess. Is the story a little predictable? Sure. But is it also somehow original? Yes. I enjoyed all of it! The awkward social miscues between one English gentleman and literally every citizen of Arizona had me constantly grinning. As far as characters go, I liked Evan a lot more than I liked Dannie, which is not normal for me. I can’t put my finger exactly on it other than Dannie was so rude for such a long time. For a large chunk of the story I just wanted to ask her to give this dude a break! But I loved the rest of the supporting cast. The whole Bolton family was the best. Frosty, the silent foreman, was a personal favorite for me. And after I finished this book I realized that he has his own sequel (which was just as good, if not better than this one!)
Overall, I gave it three stars because I thought it had some weird slow filler chapters right before the end that made me have to set the book down and come back to it. (Y’all know I’m a binge reader by nature, right?) Regardless, I highly recommend this one! It’s cute, it’s clean, it’s kind of funny, and it’s the perfect blend of Victorian and Western historical fiction!
