Saline County Clerk Doug Curtis received a Meritorious award for the Checkmark, Saline County’s official email newsletter for elections from the National Association of County Information Officers during a private ceremony on July 15th, in Nashville.
“Each year, we spotlight outstanding communications work that is meaningful in our communities,” said NACIO President Lori Letzring. “This year, our entries raised the bar for public communications even higher.”
Curtis launched the Checkmark in July 2017. In the past year, over 2,000 voters have subscribed to it. Since the launch of the newsletter, Saline County has seen a 50% increase in voter turnout for small local elections. The Checkmark has provided pertinent information for elections, such as early voting dates and times, links to sample ballots, profiles on candidates & issues, and election day voting sites.
“It is an extreme honor to receive national recognition for the work we’re doing in Saline County. The Checkmark has proven to be a great resource not just for our office, but for the voters of Saline County. We often get questions from residents about elections. ‘Where do I vote? What’s on the ballot? Where can I view the election results?’ With the Checkmark we put those questions to rest. We take great pride in serving the citizens of Saline County. Innovative ideas are a big part of our office, and it’s great to see the Checkmark already paying dividends after 1 year. I’m very excited to see the Checkmark progress with the years to come.” Said Saline County Clerk Doug Curtis.
Saline County voters can subscribe to the Checkmark by completing an online form at www.elecprep.net/checkmark or by filling out a form in our office. The Awards of Excellence is an annual competition for NACIO open to both members and nonmembers. This year’s contest drew 247 entries from around the country. The awards ceremony was held during the National Association of Counties (NACo) annual conference.
