A group of about 20 local residents pulled a collection of pollutants in the weight of two Clydesdale horses from the Saline River.
They gathered at the Saline River on Saturday, August 17th and found enough to fill 45 large contractor bags full of trash, 29 tires, a hot tub cover, a pool liner, a kid-sized four-wheeler and a steel drum. The total weight removed was 3,700 pounds or 1.85 tons.
The day of cleaning was organized by Saline River Canoe (SRC) and Saline Crossing.
Two organizations are coming together to host a cleanup event at the Saline River on Saturday, August 17th, beginning at 8 a.m.
Members of Saline River Canoe (SRC) and Saline Crossing are asking the public to join them at the Saline River access at the end of River Street in Benton for a time to pick up trash in the river and on the land. (Click to the Google Map) SRC will provide canoes, and Home Depot has donated trash bags and gloves. Lunch will be provided at noon.
“Our goal is to clean up both sides of the road on River Street, the Saline Crossing area and half a mile up and downstream.” Michael Sacomani, owner of SRC.
County crews have recently leveled out the end of River Street with gravel so that it’s driveable in a regular car.
Organizers will have jugs of Gatorade and water on hand for the hot day, just bring your own cup. There will be hot dogs for lunch.
If you have any of the following items, you will want to bring them: bug spray, sunscreen, mud boots and litter grabber.
If you can’t come for the whole time, organizers say to just come for as long as you can, and help keep the recreation area clean.
