A Benton man is in custody after a situation escalated at the Benton Police Department on Friday afternoon.
Benton Police Department officers encountered a male subject with a gun in the lobby of the Criminal Investigations Division just before 4:30 p.m. September 2nd, 2022. Following negotiations, the subject, Joseph McGowan, age 33, of Benton, was taken into custody without further incident. No injuries occurred.
McGowan was at the department to speak with detectives at their request about an ongoing investigation, but brandished and pointed a gun at himself after learning he was being placed under arrest.

Benton Police Department officers encountered a male subject with a gun in the lobby just before 4:30 Friday afternoon. Following multiple officer response and negotiations, the subject was taken into custody without incident. No injuries occurred.

According to emergency communications in Saline County on late Friday afternoon, there was a report of an active shooter in the Criminal Investigations Division of the Benton Police Department. It was reported that there was a gun aimed at someone’s head.
Personnel is now evacuated and there is an individual in custody, according to reports. We will update as soon as there is more information.
